Since 2013, weโve celebrated West Virginiaโs Birthday with custom glassware designed by a local artist. This year we partnered with our great friend and artist to create a tribute to this amazingly weird state we call home. Once the glassware arrived, we couldnโt wait to get some photos of these guys filled with beer.
As for the meaning and symbolism, we thought we would use Brianโs words to describe it:
โFor the first illustration, I took inspiration from several photos from back in the 1920โs. In one, miners are handing in their fi****ms to federal agents after the Battle of Blair Mountain, and in another of a large group of miners are gathered for a meal in Fayetteville, on their way to fight that same battle in Logan County. To me, these men and their willingness to fight for their rights, freedom and livelihoods embodies what it means to be from West Virginia. They took a stand against the bosses, and I think that itโs something that should never be forgotten. Thereโs 35 stars on the banner (emulating headlines of the day for the 35th state, WV.
The second illustration, the birds in particular are inspired by birds that coal miners had scrawled and drawn on a door in a photo by Lewis Wikes Hine in 1908.โ
We hope you can join us this Saturday, June 20th to take one of these glasses home and try some of the best craft beer that WV has to offer.
