📚 Book Review 📚

🕯️ Muñeca by Cynthia Gomez 🕯️

Oakland, 1868. A q***r, working-class witch takes a job as caregiver to a paralyzed heiress, and quickly suspects the illness is really a curse. 🌙

What I loved:✨ A magic system that's intricate and original✨ Sharp, beautiful writing that tackles colonialism and oppression✨ A slow-burn romance that warms your heart✨ A truly suspenseful "who cursed her?" mystery

Natalia's strength comes from connection and the belief that all life is valuable, not money or class. 🤍

This is the perfect spooky-season read if you want to get into the Halloween mood but don't know where to start. Fair warning: you'll want to double check that you haven't lost any loose threads or handkerchiefs lately. 👀🧵

📖 WILD DARK SHORE 🌊 by Charlotte McConaghy

A remote island near Antarctica. The world's largest seed bank (yes, that's a real thing 🌱). A father and his three children living in total isolation... until a mysterious woman washes ashore during a violent storm.

I went in expecting a fast-paced mystery — what I got instead was a slow-burn, character-driven story about grief, hope, and family, wrapped in one of the most vivid settings I've read in a while. The icy wind, the crashing waves, that drowning scene 😰 — I could feel all of it.

Fair warning: the pacing is slow, especially early on. But once the pieces start clicking into place, it's hard to put down. And the ending? Emotional without tipping into sentimental. 🖤

If you love literary fiction with a touch of suspense and unforgettable atmosphere, this one's worth the patience.

📚 Book Review 📚

📖 PAPER GHOSTS 👻 by Sarah Addison Allen

“Gram calls photographs paper ghosts. She says they’re the only ghosts everyone can see.”

Told through three generations of Wester women, this atmospheric novel is equal parts ghost story and love story — full of family secrets, a deliciously creepy old house, and the same magical realism fans of Garden Spells and First Frost will love.

At its core, it asks: can we ever really break free of our family’s mistakes, or are we always destined to repeat them? 👻🍂

A gorgeous, haunting read for the start of fall. 🍁

📚 Perfect for fans of: family sagas, small-town secrets, and a little bit of magic.
