On Monday, April 19, 2021, Joseph Boyd “Bud” Skinner passed away at the age of 65.
Bud was born on September 30, 1955, in Mobile, AL to Joe and Liz Skinner. A proud graduate of Auburn University, Bud set out to learn as much as he could about the restaurant business.
In 1984, Bud opened Jubilee Seafood in Montgomery. Jubilee, under Bud’s relentless leadership and culinary creativity, became a household name for many in Montgomery and beyond. Bud loved serving good food to everyone that came through the doors of his restaurant or happened to be lucky enough to be at a wedding or special event that he catered. Along with owning and serving as the executive chef at Jubilee, Bud owned and managed a neighboring staple in Old Cloverdale, aptly named “Bud’s.” Whether he was at the restaurant, bar, or at an event, Bud’s work ethic was unmatched, as was evident in the quality and deliciousness of the food he prepared.
When he wasn’t blackening red snapper or searing scallops, Bud could be found on the gulf coast catching billfish, relaxing at Lake Martin, or attending a NASCAR race at Talladega or Daytona, all the while keeping a close eye on the top sporting events of the day. Bud’s passion for life was evident in how much he enjoyed being around people, entertaining, and serving those around him.
Involved in several charities and organizations in Montgomery, Bud’s heart of philanthropy was evident in how much he gave of his time and talents to the community. He loved being with his family, friends, and doing what he could to help those around him.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Zell Boyd and Marian Collum Skinner. He is survived by his twin sister, Beth Crum (Billy) of Montgomery, AL; his niece, Elizabeth Boyer (John) of Jupiter, FL and their children, Jack and Salley; his nephew, William Crum III (Laura) of Montgomery and their children, Will and Louise; the current and former employees of Jubilee and Bud’s; and a countless amount of close friends that he considered family.
A private service was held on April 23, 2021. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bud Skinner Foundation at 2021 Fernway Drive, Montgomery, AL 36111.
