THIS LITTLE HOT DOG SHOP HAS BEEN SITTING ON DEXTER AVENUE SINCE 1917
If the walls at 138 Dexter Avenue could talk, we'd probably need a week to listen.

Chris' Famous Hotdogs opened in downtown Montgomery on May 1, 1917, when Greek immigrant Christopher Anastasios Katechis opened what was originally called the Post Office Café. Chris' Famous Hotdogs
More than a century later, you can still walk into that same address and order a hot dog.

And what an address it has been.
For decades, Dexter Avenue was one of the busiest and most historically important streets in Alabama.

Chris' operated curb service until the 1960s, with cars lining up for hot dogs covered in the restaurant's distinctive chili sauce. Chris' Famous Hotdogs
Then look at some of the people who came through.

Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Harry Truman.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Hank Williams.
Elvis Presley.
George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.
Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald were regular customers during that time.

Imagine sitting at the counter and having no idea that the person a few stools away would eventually become part of American history.
There's another chapter now, too.

After more than three generations under the Katechis family, the restaurant changed ownership in 2025. Longtime Montgomery residents Morris and Leslie Capp took over, with plans to preserve the restaurant's traditions. Chris' Famous Hotdogs
Chris' is still operating today.
Same Dexter Avenue address.

Still hot dogs.
Still hamburgers.
Still that famous chili sauce.
That's exactly what makes these Alabama restaurants so special.
Sometimes the most remarkable history isn't hidden in an abandoned building.
Sometimes it's still open for lunch.



First comment: More than 100 years of customers have walked through those doors. Just imagine the conversations that little restaurant has heard.
