Chris’ Famous Hotdogs, 1982.
In this 1982 photo, Theo Katechis (left), son of founder Chris Katechis, talks with then co-owner Gus Lezos about the future of Chris’ Famous Hotdogs on Dexter Avenue.

At the time, the beloved restaurant was undergoing only its second expansion in its 65-year history. Chris Katechis, who immigrated from Greece to Alabama and founded the restaurant, had built a downtown institution that generations of Montgomery residents would come to know and love.

Looking to the future while embracing a growing national trend, Theo announced that Chris’ would be trying its hand at the arcade game craze. The new addition featured four tables, an eating counter, and seven arcade games, including the wildly popular Pac-Man.

The paneled expansion occupied space on the west side of the building that had once been home to McGehee Drugstore, which relocated in 1970. The area had been subleased to various merchants before becoming part of Chris’.

The restaurant’s first expansion came in the early 1940s, when it extended into the rear half of the building, a space previously occupied by Rosemont Gardens, Inc. Years later, during Montgomery’s downtown renewal project of 1972–73, Chris’ added the distinctive stone façade that still evokes memories of a changing era.

More than a restaurant, Chris’ was a witness to the evolution of downtown Montgomery, adapting with the times while remaining rooted in the traditions that made it a local landmark.

Check out this beautiful memory of Chris Katechis (Chris’ Hotdogs) from Mr. Geoff Stough.

From Geoff ———> “Good morning. I’ll tell you a little story about what a great man Mr. Chris was. My father was born during WW2 and required a certain type of milk due to being underweight. My great grandfather was good friends with Mr. Chris and asked if he could help since rationing was going on and the milk was largely unavailable. Mr. Chris included an order with his supply of milk and my great grandfather just paid him. He literally saved my father’s life.”

Thank you for sharing this Mr. Stough🙏

On May 29, 1970 Martin Twin Theatre opened its doors on East South Blvd in Montgomery. The first movies shown were "Marooned" with Gregory Peck and Disney's "King of the Grizzlies." The theatre operated until 1992 when it officially closed its doors. Do you remember seeing movies there?
