Ever wonder what “OVS” means in school lunch? 🍎

OVS stands for Offer vs. Serve—it gives students the freedom to choose what they actually want to eat from the meal offered, while still meeting nutrition requirements.

In this tray, you’ll see a great example: the student selected a variety of fruits, veggies, milk, and an entrée—but chose not to take the bread. And that’s okay! With OVS, students can decline certain items (like grains) as long as they take the required components.

This approach helps:✔️ Reduce food waste✔️ Give students choice and independence✔️ Encourage healthier eating habits

It’s all about balance, flexibility, and making sure students get what they need—without forcing food they won’t eat!

School nutrition professionals do more than just serve food. They create welcoming spaces, build relationships with students, ensure meals meet important nutrition standards, and keep everything running smoothly day after day.

Due to a safety issue in regards to our food delivery we had to reject some items for next week.
Tuesday’s Elementary lunch was supposed to be a Taco Pocket. That is now going to be Cheese Pizza. I know, I know, the kids will be devastated. But, we will make it through. 😉
Coincidentally, today was cheese pizza day!! Check out this students tray and the great choices he made.
Plus, our HS fruit and vegetable bar was beautiful. Had to share.

School Lunch Hero Day is coming soon!!

The first Friday of each May is a day to celebrate and appreciate all of the hard work that School Nutrition Staff put in to feeding our nations students each year. Early morning hours, last minute shipping hiccups, and short staffing are only a few of the challenges these teams face. Lots of love is whipped up daily in food service departments across the country. Here is a chance to honor those staff who work so hard behind the scenes to provide smiles and meals.

So on May 1, 2026, thank a Lunch Lady.
