Before there was the bridge we know today, there was the historic Wagon Bridge — the first commercially used bridge spanning the Wabash River in Montezuma.
Long before modern transportation, ferries carried goods and travelers across the river. In the 1880s, the Wagon Bridge was rebuilt using steel and concrete construction and served the community for decades before its collapse in the late 1940s.
These photos offer a rare glimpse into the history of our riverfront and the construction of the bridge that would eventually replace it.
At Reservation, we’re proud to be part of a community with such deep roots and rich history along the Wabash River.
