Something new is coming to the Portal this week!

We’re excited to welcome the Monroe County Community College Art Club for the grand opening of a new art exhibition celebrating the creativity of local artists!

The exhibition will feature a variety of artistic mediums, with each artist sharing their own creativity, perspective and style. Select pieces will also be available for purchase.

And we’re kicking it all off with a special evening celebrating LOCAL ART & LIVE MUSIC!

Come meet the presenting artists, explore their work and enjoy an evening dedicated to Monroe’s creative community.

Making the night even more special, Tony Marchese — The Virtual Violinist will perform LIVE from 6–9 p.m., bringing his dynamic blend of classical skill and contemporary flair to the Portal.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY — “REMEMBER THE RAISIN!”

On this day, October 5, 1813, a battle nearly 200 miles from Monroe brought the story of the River Raisin to a dramatic turning point.

We wrote a post about "Remember the Raisin a few days ago, but today is the day in history it was realized. Nine months after the devastating Battles of the River Raisin at Frenchtown—present-day Monroe—American forces met the British and War Chief Tecumseh's Native confederacy at the Battle of the Thames in present-day Ontario.

And with them went a rallying cry born from the tragedy here at home:
“REMEMBER THE RAISIN!”

The National Park Service notes that the memory of what happened at River Raisin inspired American troops at the Battle of the Thames. The American victory on October 5 helped secure the western theater of the War of 1812 for the United States. Tecumseh, the great Shawnee War Chief who had worked to unite Native nations in defense of their homelands, was killed during the battle, and his confederacy was dealt a devastating blow.

It's an extraordinary connection to our community: events that occurred along the River Raisin in Monroe became a rallying cry heard on battlefields hundreds of miles away.

Today, 213 years later, the words “Remember the Raisin!” still remind us that Monroe played a significant role in a much larger struggle that shaped the future of Michigan, the Great Lakes and Native nations throughout the Old Northwest.
History happened here. Remember the Raisin.
