What is ska? Think punk rock’s energy collided with Jamaican rhythms, added a horn section, and gave everyone permission to dance. If you’ve ever seen people skanking—that joyful, bouncing, running-in-place dance move that looks like you’re having the best day of your life—you’ve already experienced part of ska culture.
This Wednesday, June 3, the Queen Bean welcomes Foolish Relics, a rising ska-punk band from Bradenton, Florida (Tampa Bay), as they roll through Modesto on their California Sun Tour. Formed during the pandemic, the band has built a growing national following through relentless touring, energetic live shows, and songs like Thank You 4 Skankin’ and Forget About Tomorrow (Is This Hell?), which even found its way onto commercial alt-rock radio. They’ve shared stages with notable acts across the country and are bringing that same high-energy, horn-driven party to Modesto.
And they’re not coming alone.
Joining them are Modesto favorites Awake 301 and Horizon Point, making this a rare chance to catch a touring national ska-punk act alongside two outstanding local bands. We talk a lot about supporting live music and building culture in our city, this is exactly what that looks like. A band from the opposite side of the country is making a stop in Modesto because our scene matters.
So lace up your dancing shoes, practice your skankin'c and come help us show these Florida musicians what Central Valley hospitality looks like.
