A Message from Penelope House Chair Paulette Pastor
OCTOBER is a month when we get out our witches, demons and monster decorations, load up on candy, and anxiously wait for the children to ring the doorbell and shout “Trick or Treat.” The next day cleanup begins, and everything is placed back in their totes and put away until next year. Unfortunately for some, these creatures do not go away as they exist in the real world, creating fear in the lives of their partner and often their children.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Please remember the work that this non-profit organization that bears our name does to help the victims of domestic abuse.
Consider the following:
-Acknowledge Domestic Violence Awareness month and report on the good works of Penelope House at your meeting
-Have a special fund-raising event in honor of Penelope House
-Wear Purple at your October Daughters of Penelope Meeting
Even better, if you have a Penelope House T-Shirt, wear it!
2026 DVAM Tonie Ann Coumanis Torrans Theme
This year we honor those who have “danced through the storm” of domestic violence, those who have taken a leap of faith, and those who have turned their trauma and heartache into a reminder that there is life, joy, and self-discovery on the other side of abuse.
Our community partners, supporters, and survivors have come together in solidarity to wear purple tutus that reflect the strength, bravery, optimism, and adaptability of survivors.
As you view this year’s DVA display, we hope that you’ll take a moment to reflect on the courage it takes for survivors to keep going and strive for a happier and healthier life for themselves and their families. And that you’ll remember that “Domestic Violence Awareness is tutu important!” 💜
