September is considered the best overall month to experience a South Dakota road trip. Visiting during this shoulder season rewards you with comfortable, mild autumn temperatures across the state, far smaller crowds after the peak summer rush, and beautiful early fall foliage. It is the ideal window to seamlessly combine the higher-elevation Black Hills with the rugged Badlands.
🍁 Weather & What to Expect The Black Hills (Rapid City/Custer): Highs average around 73°F, making it perfect for hiking and outdoor exploration. Pack layers, as nights get quite crisp. Badlands National Park: Tends to stay warmer, averaging highs around 81°F. Bring plenty of sun protection and waterfall Colors: Prime autumn foliage generally begins rolling through the state from mid-September through mid-October. Business Hours: While major parks stay open, note that some seasonal local businesses may shorten their hours or close after Labor Day.
We look forward to seeing you. Just off of I90, Exit 332.
