October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year Monterrey is going PINK!

We’ve partnered with RiverBend Apparel & Promotions to create our Tacos & Tatas shirts, with a portion of every shirt sold donated to hellogorgeous_of_hope a local nonprofit that provides complimentary makeovers and confidence-building experiences for women battling cancer.

Shirts are $25 and available in sizes S–XXL.

Orders are only open for a limited time and must be placed by Saturday (9/26) at NOON, so grab yours, wear it throughout October, and help us support an organization doing something pretty special for women in our community.

Before the tacos, before the enchiladas, before the chips and salsa… there was corn.

Thousands of years ago, Indigenous peoples in what is now Mexico domesticated maize from a wild grass called teosinte. Over generations, they transformed it into one of the most important crops on Earth.

But they did something else remarkable, too.

They developed nixtamalization, cooking corn with an alkaline substance such as lime. The process improves the corn’s nutrition, flavor and ability to become masa, the foundation for tortillas, tamales and countless other foods.

So the next time you pick up a taco, remember:

You’re holding the result of thousands of years of agricultural knowledge in your hand.

Pretty impressive for something we occasionally fill with ground beef and eat in three bites.

Food has a funny way of remembering things for us.

A smell can take you back to your grandmother’s kitchen. A recipe can cross an ocean without ever being written down. A certain meal can make a place you haven’t seen in years suddenly feel very close.

Across Hispanic cultures, food has long been one of the ways families preserve traditions and pass pieces of themselves from one generation to the next.

And maybe that’s why we love this business so much.

We may be serving dinner, but around those tables people are celebrating birthdays, introducing babies, catching up with old friends, having first dates, remembering people they miss and making traditions their kids may someday repeat with their own families.

Sometimes food is just food.

And sometimes it carries a whole story with it. ❤️

Some people say “I love you” with words. We prefer tacos. 🌮❤️

Feeding people has always been about more than putting food on a plate. It’s taking care of people, bringing families together, celebrating the good days, making the hard days a little easier, and creating a place where everyone has a seat at the table.

That’s been our love language for a long time, and we don’t plan on changing it anytime soon. Come hungry. We’ll take care of the rest. ❤️

For the next few weeks, we’re going to tell you some stories. ❤️

September 15 through October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month, and while we could simply make a post saying Happy Hispanic Heritage Month, we thought this was a better opportunity to do something we love: learn, share, eat, and tell stories.

Because behind so many of the foods we serve are stories that began long before Monterrey ever existed.

Stories about corn being cultivated thousands of years ago. About cacao before it became the chocolate we know today. About recipes passed from grandparents to grandchildren without ever touching a recipe card. About music, language, art, celebrations, family tables and traditions that look completely different depending on what country, or even what region, you call home.

And that’s important, because “Hispanic culture” isn’t one culture. It represents an incredibly diverse collection of countries, communities, histories and traditions.

So between our normal tacos, margaritas, memes and general Facebook nonsense 😂, we’re going to spend the next few weeks sharing little pieces of that history and beauty with you.

We certainly don’t know everything. We’re learning too. But maybe by October 15, we’ll all know something we didn’t before, and appreciate a little more of the history behind the food sitting on our tables.

And knowing us, we’ll probably find several excuses to eat while we’re doing it.
