Alma has been welcoming guests with authentic hospitality and diverse, contemporary American cooking for nearly two decades. We offer a casual, comfortable environment worthy of both celebrations and everyday visits, 7 days a week. The Cafe is a relaxed place for eating and socializing. Counter-service, table-side digital ordering and online take away available. Restaurant Alma features a nationally recognized seasonal tasting menu perfect for special occasions. Dinner only - reservations recommended. We also offer seven guestrooms for overnight stay. Our comfortable, well appointed domestic spaces will be appreciated by travelers looking for a vibrant urban location as well as locals looking for an convenient getaway. Opened in 1999 by Chef / Restaurateur Alex Roberts in a historic firehouse & adjacent speedboat factory, the spaces were reimagined and designed by James Dayton Design and Talin Spring in 2016. Our approach towards the operation of Alma is truly collaborative, and we believe that every single member of our team is integral to our success. As September winds down, so does the bounty of late summer in MN. The calendar officially welcomed fall this week and along with it we start the transition from warm weather favorites like tomatoes, corn, and zucchini to hardier crops like squash, apples, and roots.

It’s been such an amazing summer, send it off right at Restaurant Alma. Dining room seats available this weekend 🥰

A rainy, sleepy September Saturday definitely calls for a little comfort! On special this weekend at Cafe Alma: Sausage, Egg and Cheese sandos w/ souffled egg, Sakura pork-sage sausage, smoked Gouda, tomato jam on buttery toasted roll.

It’s over ⬇️

Summer, that is. Didn’t mean to frighten you. But, lots of good stuff ahead.

Soon enough the tomatoes and corn start making room for squash, mushrooms, apples and all the other good things we’ve been anxious to get back to. We talk a lot about seasonal cooking around here. Probably too much?

Something we talk about less is that hospitality changes with the seasons, too. In July, maybe the right move is a cold drink and an open window. In October, maybe it’s taking your coat, pouring a sturdy glass of red and getting something warm on the table.

Our chefs aren’t the only ones moving with the seasons! The menu changes and so does the room.

Anyway. Fall. We’re ready for it ❤️

Everyone hates waiting.

Waiting for the package to arrive. For your ride to finally show up. For the first cool night after a summer’s worth of heat.

Most of us (ourselves included) are pretty well conditioned to hate waiting. Especially now, when almost everything is instantly available. In this very moment, there are large numbers of people staring at their phones and getting visibly irritated with loading screens and progress bars.

But there’s a good kind of waiting.

Those few minutes when you know something good is coming, but you don’t know exactly what yet. A server holding something delicious disappears around a corner. A glass lands on the table. From the kitchen: stainless tapping against cast iron, the hiss of seafood hitting hot steel and oil, the distant pop of a cork.

Something is happening. You’re just not part of it yet.

Maybe anticipation is half the pleasure of going out to eat.

After more than two decades of Alma and nearly as many years of Brasa, there’s a lot to look back on. But perhaps the more interesting question is what all those years can teach us about what comes next.
