It’s been 2 months of rage, and sorrow, and love, and awe for the community we share, and we’re so relieved to announce we’re returning to regular hours this week. Not Pictured: an incredible group of Latinx folks who just endured months of terror and just want to do their jobs of feeding their neighbors. Pictured Here: three folks who are forever grateful to get to work alongside of them.

15 years ago today The Lowbrow opened its doors for the first time. We dreamed that we would become a place where neighbors could gather and eat in community. We hoped we could last long enough to watch your kids grow up. We never dreamed we’d have to operate in a city under siege by our own government. We turned 10 during Covid, now we turn 15 during Occupation. We’ll celebrate with you when they leave, but we’re betting life will never be the same as it was. The threads that knit us together are only getting stronger while they try to use fear and chaos to divide us. We love you South Mpls. Thanks for 15 years of building community. Here’s to brighter days ahead.

We stand with our immigrant neighbors and community. We will be open Friday Jan 23 and will DONATE 100% of profits to the Immigrant Law Center of MN and the Immigrant Rapid Response Fund. We feel this action most closely aligns with our commitment to our City and with our deeply held belief that we are at our best when we gather in community.

Additional context in response to community feedback (the majority of which has been positive )

We made the decision that we would stay open and donate 100% of what we make to The Legal Defense Fund and Immigrant Rapid Response Fund. We think a strike like this only hurts small, independent businesses and their employees who are on the front lines of trying to keep their employees safe and paid. How many of the businesses that are closing are going to pay all their employees? A strike only works if everyone participates, but no corporate businesses are planning to close, so all the burden falls on small, independent businesses to close on the busiest day of the week during the slowest month of the year.

We believe deeply in the “gather to give“ model: we have been donating 10% of sales to local organizations every Monday night for almost 15 years. We consulted with social workers, other business owners, and many customers who encouraged us to follow our gut and stay open to give.

We hope folks will dine with us if it fits their understanding of what is the best use of their time and resources, and DEFINITELY don’t dine with us if that fits your understanding of what is best.

We are all in this fight together and we want to do the best we can. I’m sorry to anyone who disagrees with our thinking on this issue, but this is not a cash grab. We’re donating all the money we make.

For the time being we’re going to close at 9:00 every day to ensure all our staff can get home safely. It has been buoying to see how many of you have reached out to ask how you can help our staff. They feel your love and support. We have friends everywhere. ❤️

We stand with our neighbors and community- ALL OF THEM, Somali, Latinx, and those using their voices to standup for the rights of all our citizens. We thought about closing tonight but we think it makes more sense to be open as a place of love and peace and community.
