Alpen Sierra Coffee Roasting Co.

Alpen Sierra Coffee Roasting Co. The Sierra Nevada - Tahoe region's premier sustainable specialty coffee roasting company.

In 1988 while on a rainy day trek in the Rohrmoos Tal, near Schladming, Austria, founder and Roastmaster, Christian Waskiewicz, was inspired with the vision to create Alpen Sierra Coffee Company in Lake Tahoe. Having spent much of his life in the Alps of Europe and the Sierra Nevada of California, Christian’s love of good living has become the foundation of Alpen Sierra’s goal of providing a quality experience, which is embodied in every bean roasted and cup brewed. Serving its first cup of coffee in an historical log cabin on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe in 1991, Alpen Sierra has grown to become recognized as the premier roaster of specialty coffees in the Sierra Nevada. Locals and visitors from around the world now enjoy Mountain Roasted Lake Tahoe coffees at home, in our award-winning coffeehouse and at 120 + specialty food establishments throughout the region.

Great coffee starts with getting the basics right—and coffee-to-water ratio is one of the biggest.

Too much coffee can overpower the cup. Too little can leave it tasting thin. Finding the right balance gives you a better brew and, just as importantly, a way to repeat it.

Our latest article breaks down coffee-to-water ratios for pour-over, drip, French press, AeroPress, cold brew, espresso, and more—plus why we often start around 1:16 to 1:17.

Measure. Brew. Taste. Adjust.

Direct relationships make better coffee possible. ☕🌱

Our Direct Trade Relationship Coffee model connects us more closely with the farmers behind the cup—supporting fair compensation, greater traceability, and exceptional quality from harvest to roast. Our first DTRC microlot comes from the Samoya family of Café L’Etranger in El Salvador, featuring a beautifully complex Yellow Icatu with notes of fruit, hazelnut, cocoa, and rose.

Featured Coffee: Rwanda Dukunde Kawa 🇷🇼

Vibrant, complex, and deeply rooted in community. Our Coffee of the Month delivers incredible notes of chocolate, lime, and lemongrass.

Washed • Organic • Fair Trade Certified

Dukunde Kawa is a well-known producer group in Rwanda, as much for exceptionally bright and memorable coffees as for its exceptional business structure: the cooperative carries multiple certifications for its various washing stations, including Fair Trade, Organic, Rainforest Alliance, and UTZ, and more than 80% of its workforce is women. The organization is located in the Northern province, which, despite its proximity to Kigali, tends to be less well known in specialty coffee than the west and south. Since first organizing in 2000 with a single wet mill, years before the majority of washing stations in Rwanda even existed, Dukunde Kawa has received sustainability awards from the SCA and placed in the top positions in Rwanda’s Cup of Excellence competition. Today the cooperative has over 2,000 farmer members and multiple washing stations in the Gakenke District north of Kigali. Mbilima is one of these stations.
