🇺🇸🧶 A NEW COMMUNITY PROJECT — HONORING OUR VETERANS ❤️🤍💙
Dear Crochet Family,
I’m very excited to share another meaningful opportunity that has come to our Crochet Club.
I was contacted by Melody Cline, Volunteer Coordinator with Delaware Hospice, after one of their volunteers, Dottie Vuono, shared our information with her. Melody coordinates a hospice program serving military veterans, and she invited our Crochet Club to help create handmade patriotic blankets for the veterans they honor.
But after Melody explained what happens with these blankets, I realized this project is about so much more than making a blanket. ❤️
Through the We Honor Veterans Program, Delaware Hospice holds special Bedside Pinning Ceremonies for veterans receiving hospice care. Staff and family members gather around the veteran, patriotic music and poetry are shared, and the veteran is presented with a certificate of honor, an American flag pin, and a handmade patriotic blanket.
Melody told me these ceremonies can be especially meaningful for veterans who served during the Vietnam War, some of whom experienced not only the trauma of war but also a difficult reception when they returned home.
And then comes something made by hands like ours—a blanket created especially to honor them. 🇺🇸❤️
The blankets should be approximately throw size—large enough to cuddle under, but not so large or heavy that they become uncomfortable. They should have a red, white and blue patriotic theme, but Melody wants our members to have creative freedom. You can choose the pattern and design that speaks to you.
They conduct approximately 30 ceremonies each year throughout Delaware, but there is no required number of blankets and no pressure to complete them by a certain date. We can work on them throughout the year and deliver several together, or provide them a few at a time.
They have also generously offered to provide us with some donated yarn for this project. 🧶❤️
I wanted all of you to know the story behind these blankets before we begin. When you are choosing your colors and making every stitch, I want you to know where that blanket may eventually go and what it may represent to the veteran and family receiving it.
One stitch may seem small, but when hundreds of them come together, they can become a very special way of saying:
We see you. We remember your service. And we honor you. 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙

As we prepare for our new We Honor Veterans blanket project, we’d love a little help from our community!
If you have unused yarn in red, white, blue, or other patriotic coordinating colors sitting at home that you no longer plan to use, please consider donating it to the Milton Crochet Club. Our members will turn donated yarn into handmade throw blankets that will be presented to military veterans during special hospice Bedside Pinning Ceremonies. ❤️🤍💙
You can drop off yarn at Milton Home Coffee Roastery or bring it to any of our Crochet Club gatherings at Milton Public Library or Quayside at Milton Theatre.
Even if you don’t crochet, this is a beautiful way to contribute to the project. Your unused yarn could become part of a blanket that honors and comforts a veteran. 🇺🇸🧶❤️
