Why I Named It ALAB 🔥

Many people think my baking journey started during the pandemic. But the truth is, my love for baking began much earlier.

Years ago, I was already enrolled at MICAH Culinary Arts & Hotel Management and ready to begin that chapter of my life. However, my parents encouraged me to finish my bachelor’s degree first, so I eventually withdrew from the program and followed a different path.

But that desire to create never really left me.

Years later, during the pandemic, I finally had the opportunity to pursue what I had always loved. I enrolled in a TESDA baking program, where I received my first oven and baking tools as a scholar. After completing the program, I continued developing my craft at Apicius Culinary School, where I gained deeper training and a stronger foundation in the culinary arts.

When it came time to name my business, I wanted something personal.

ALAB came from my name — Andrea Louerma Alim Belmonte.

But what made it special was its meaning.

In Filipino, “alab” means a flame. A fire. A passion that continues to burn.

And that’s exactly what baking has been for me.

Not a passing interest.
Not a temporary hobby.
But a dream that waited patiently for its time.

Today, ALABakeshop is a reminder that some dreams may take longer than expected, but they are always worth pursuing.

When I first started joining events, I never thought much about what I wore. For me, the most important thing was always the taste of my desserts. I believed that if the food was good, it would speak for itself.

Then one day, an organizer pulled me aside and gave me advice I would never forget:

“Always show up at your best. You’re not only representing yourself—you’re representing your brand.”

That conversation changed the way I saw things. I realized that presenting myself well is another way of showing respect for my customers, the organizers who trusted me, and the brand I am slowly building.

There was a time when ALABakeshop wasn’t given the opportunity to sell at certain events. Today, we’ve been welcomed by some of the biggest Filipino organizations—and standing behind this table now feels like a beautiful full-circle moment.

Thank you to every organizer who gave ALABakeshop a chance. And to my mother-in-law, thank you for introducing me to the Filipino community and opening the first doors for this little dream.

The taste will always come first—but now, I understand the importance of showing up with the same care and intention I put into every dessert I make. 🤍

I almost didn’t post this, but I wanted to remember this moment.

When we first moved to the U.S., we were starting over.
There were so many priorities, and buying a KitchenAid wasn’t one of them.

Then Kuya Chris , a family member of my husband, gave me my very first KitchenAid mixer. That mixer became part of the beginning of ALABakeshop here in the U.S. It stayed with me through late nights, early mornings, countless batches, and so many milestones.
After months of hard work, it finally retired.

This is now my third KitchenAid-but the first one will always be the most meaningful because it reminded me that sometimes, God answers our prayers through the kindness of other people.

Kuya Chris , thank you for believing in me before I even knew how far this dream would go. I hope one day I can bless others the way you blessed us.
