Let us all remember what the volunteers and their families put on the line with each call for help

Today, we honor and remember one of our own.

On July 26, 1973, Firefighter Charles “Pete” Waple made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to a reported structure fire. At just 25 years old, Pete lost his life when the Union Hose Company fire truck was involved in a tragic crash on Route 230 while answering the call for help.

Pete became the second Line of Duty Death in the history of the Middletown Fire Department, following Harold Mansberger’s sacrifice in 1947.

Every alarm answered carries risk. Pete’s dedication to serving his community reminds us of the courage and selflessness that firefighters demonstrate each time they respond.

Today, we pause to remember Firefighter Charles “Pete” Waple, honor his sacrifice, and ensure his legacy is never forgotten.
