Mujeres luchando por un mejor futuro | San Martin Todos Santos, Guatemala | Washed process
This is the second harvest we’ve brought in of a coffee that’s become one of our favorite clean but complex, washed crowd-pleasers. “Mujeres luchando por un mejor futuro” are a group of 276 women who, through hard work and perseverance, have succeeded in shirking the status quo and producing a coffee to uplift their community. The group’s name translates to “women fighting for a better future”, and that’s exactly what these women are doing through their coffee.
Through both coffee production and their work in the community to help other women start businesses to make their own unique skills profitable (textiles, fruit jams, you name it!), the group is providing financial stability and independence for a wide array of women in the community of the San Martin Cuchumatanes in Guatemala.
Over time, the women have become able to gain access to necessary resources to produce a high-quality coffee — the result a stunning coffee from a project they call “Ella”. Ella translates to “she”, and is emblematic of the farmers growing, caring for, nurturing this excellent coffee before it meets our roaster and cup. This is a washed coffee that undergoes a 36-hour fermentation and is patio dried for 14 days on the farm in Todos Santos. We taste toasted marshmallow, dates, and melted chocolate. 🍫 🍈
The farmers are: Ilse Ortiz, Ofeliz Gomez, Griselda Tello, Vilma Mejia, Marisol Tello, Paola Mejia, Julia Cifuentes, Felipa Mejia, Eleodora Aguilar, Ana Gomez, Gloria Gomez, Macaria Godinez, Lorena, Adhani, Alba, and Rebeca.
