🐓 Chickens & Florida Freezes (What Really Matters)
Chickens are cold-hardier than heat-hardy, but Florida freezes are tricky because they’re:
• Sudden
• Damp
• Often followed by wind
Your goal is dry + draft-free + ventilated (not warm like a house).
⸻
✅ STEP-BY-STEP: Winterize a Chicken Coop in Florida
1️⃣ Stop Drafts (NOT Airflow)
• Cover wind-facing hardware cloth with:
• Clear plastic
• Tarps
• Coroplast
• Leave upper vents open so moisture escapes.
Cold air is fine — moving cold air is the enemy.
⸻
2️⃣ Deep Bedding = Free Heat
• Add 4–6 inches of:
• Pine shavings (best)
• Straw (ok, but watch moisture)
• Do not clean it right before a freeze.
• The composting action creates natural warmth.
⸻
3️⃣ Roost Setup (Critical)
• Use wide, flat roosts (2x4 boards, wide side up)
• Birds sit on their feet and cover toes → prevents frostbite
• Roost higher than nest boxes so they don’t sleep in nests
⸻
4️⃣ NO Heat Lamps (Usually)
For Florida:
• ❌ Skip heat lamps unless:
• Temps drop below 25°F
• You have silkies, bantams, or sick birds
• Fire risk > benefit
✔️ If you MUST add heat:
• Use flat panel poultry heaters
• Secure to wall, never near bedding
⸻
5️⃣ Protect Combs & Wattles
Large-comb breeds (Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds):
• Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly or bag balm on very cold nights
• This helps prevent frostbite when temps dip near freezing
⸻
6️⃣ Water Will Freeze First
• Florida freezes often ice water before birds struggle
Options:
• Heated water base (safest)
• Swap water morning & evening
• Black rubber bowls freeze slower and are easy to knock ice out of
🚫 Never let chickens go without water — digestion depends on it.
⸻
7️⃣ Feed Adjustments
• Give extra scratch grains at dusk
• Digestion generates body heat overnight
• Keep normal layer feed available all day
⸻
❌ What NOT To Do
• Don’t seal the coop airtight
• Don’t bring chickens inside your house
• Don’t panic — cold snaps are short in Florida
⸻
🧠 Florida Chicken Reality Check
• Chickens handle cold better than Florida heat
• Dry + calm + fed birds are fine down to the low 20s
• Most losses happen from dampness and wind, not temperature
