Whoa… look what we just uncovered under our feet! 😱

While doing some drainage work, the crew dug up these massive old walls buried more than 10 feet underground right here at Peerless Mill Inn & Brewery.

What you’re looking at? Almost certainly the long-lost walls of Lock 26 — the original Miamisburg Lock on the historic Miami & Erie Canal!

Back in 1828 this very spot was a busy sawmill powered by canal water. Boats would stop, drop off logs, and our predecessors turned them into the lumber that helped build early Miamisburg. The lock itself was the “elevator” that raised and lowered those canal boats as they traveled between Cincinnati and Toledo. For decades it was the heartbeat of industry here… then it got buried and forgotten under pavement and dirt. Until now.

We’re standing on 198 years of history, and it just decided to say hello. Pretty cool, right?

This is what the Mill looked like in the 1800s.

Built as a sawmill on the Miami & Erie Canal in 1828, this building has been through it all — flour milling, the Peerless Pantry opening in 1929, decades as the beloved Peerless Mill Inn, a devastating fire in 2003 that nearly took it down, closing in 2008… and yet here we still stand.

Nearly 200 years of history. Floods, fires, economic shifts, changing times — and the walls are still standing. That kind of resilience is rare.

Today we’re proud to carry that legacy forward as Peerless Mill Inn & Brewery. Come sit where so many generations have gathered, raise a glass, and experience a piece of Miamisburg history that’s still alive and well.
