Tung and I want to express our thanks to Rod Mandelstam and Mandelstam theatre to two weeks of performance of a fantastic musical “ Soup”!!! Gil Kaufman the adaptation from the book was incredible and the music and lyrics by Jim Camacho were sublime!!! I think there should be a recording of the music showing the lyrics!
Of course a big Thank you to the actors and crew- they pulled it all together!!!
And Thank you all of our faithful Hy Vong customers!!!
For 40 years you have offered us support and love: from waiting in line for a table, for fixing things at Hy Vong. You fixed the urinal, built and gave us a bench, for outside so people could sit down, even became busboys when someone didn’t show up, and taking a chance to see a musical based on our memoir. I know the musical was worth it!!!
Finally thank you Tung for putting up with me for 50 years and allowing me to LOVE her daughter- Phuongy ( now Lyn)!!!
Love
Kathy

This beautiful short film by Susan Wittenberg and Carol Stein takes us back to the people, food and spirit behind the little Miami restaurant that became so much more than a place to eat.

For decades, Hy Vong brought people together around the table. At the heart of it was the remarkable story of Tung Nguyen and Kathy Manning — a friendship that began in 1975 and eventually led them to open Hy Vong together. That same story would later become the memoir Mango & Peppercorns, and today, it lives on stage in SOUP: The Musical.

If you remember Hy Vong, watch this and take a trip back with us. And if you never had the chance to experience it, come discover the story behind it. ❤️

From a little restaurant on Eighth Street to the stage. ❤️🎭

Thank you to and Flor Franceschetti for sharing the story behind SOUP: The Musical, and the incredible journey of Hy Vong, Kathy Manning and Tung Nguyen.

For decades, Hy Vong was more than a restaurant. It was a place where cultures met, friendships formed, and Miami gathered around the same table. That story became the memoir Mango & Peppercorns, and now it has found a new life on stage through music.

As Jim Camacho shared with Miami New Times, this is an immigrant story, but also “an American story,” one built on hope, determination, kindness and the courage to start again.
