I hope any of you new chicken keepers read this, and learn from us that been doing this for a hot 🔥 minute.

Let’s talk about the size of our coops. I think this has a big bearing on why a lot of people are losing birds in this heat. How do you go about determining how many birds you are going to put in your coops? For us we have breeding coops with most of them being 10’x10’ - 12’x12’. So these coops are 100 square feet to 144 square feet. A chicken requires 10 square feet of space to comfortably live in a coop without being stressed. I am seeing a lot of people right now that are losing birds because they are crowding to many birds in a small space. This leads to stress, less air flow, poor hygiene, and aggression amongst the flock in there. When you buy these coops from tractor supply and they say that they will accommodate 14-18 fully grown birds that is simply not true. Measure it out and go by the 10 square feet per chicken rule. If these birds are stressed and unhappy because they are cramped into to tight of a coop several things are going to happen. First off you are going to lose some especially on this heat we are dealing with. But this also leads to simply unhealthy birds. In nature when overcrowding is an issue Mother Nature will bring on disease to lighten the load. Sick birds will always be the indicator to birds that simply don’t make it. Then you will say she was fine and then she just died. This does happen but a bird that is sick within a coop of a bunch of birds can’t show weakness. When they do the rest of them will end up pecking it to death. Hopefully you can catch this before it happens. This is why when you see a sick bird most of the time it is already too late. They have hid it until they can’t hide it anymore. This over crowding also happens to so many people in Brooders. We put these chicks in there and then so many get trampled in the corners especially if you have different aged chicks in the same brooders. Let’s face it most people don’t have but one brooder and if you are new to chicks and over crowd them you will learn the hard way. It doesn’t matter if it is a $5 chick or $75 chick. Most of y’all know this but there are a lot of newer people that don’t. What are your thoughts?

Big Eggs, Tiny Nugget 🐣

A new little nugget has hatched! 🐣

My Bresse hen, Candy, is my biggest egg layer. This girl lays a JUMBO egg every single time! 🥚 And she’s still laying strong in this Georgia heat, which deserves its own award because ♨️🥵😂

So naturally, I thought… why not make some BIG eggs for my eating flock?

I paired Candy with my Easter Egger (EE) boy, hoping to get some of that Bresse size combined with the fun egg genetics from the EE. 🥚

I only put 2 eggs in the incubator, and thankfully BOTH hatched! 🙌🥰

Now comes the hard part… PLEASE let them both be GIRLS! 😂🙏👧🐥

I’m really curious to see what these two grow into and, eventually, what kind of eggs they lay!

Has anyone else raised a Bresse × Easter Egger cross? If so, tell me what you got! 👀🥚🐔
