As America celebrates 250 years of freedom this Independence Day, my heart is also with the families whose lives were forever changed one year ago today.

In the early morning hours, the devastating floods at Camp Mystic in Texas claimed the lives of 27 precious souls. While so many gather with fireworks, flags, and family traditions, there are parents, siblings, and loved ones carrying the unimaginable weight of this anniversary.

This tragedy really hit home for me as I grew up just 2 hours away from where this happened. I painted this last year in their honor.

At its center stands New Orleans’ Weeping Angel, gently holding a bouquet of Texas yellow roses while kneeling a bed of Texas bluebonnets. Behind her, the floodwaters begin to recede along with broken trees as a reminder of the devastation left behind, but also of the resilience that follows tragedy.

Today, as we celebrate our nation’s blessings, may we also pause to remember those 27 beautiful lives, lift their families in prayer, and hold close the truth that love endures long after the waters have gone.

🇺🇸 God bless America, and may God continue to comfort the hearts of every family carrying this loss.
