When a patient asks ChatGPT about dental implants in their city, the model pulls its answer from somewhere. New research in Dental Economics tracked 13,152 citation events across 1,405 patient questions and found that practice-owned websites made up 53.8% of all sources. For orthodontics, that number was 75.8%.

Most of those pages say things like "We offer implants. Call to schedule." The model has nothing to quote, so it quotes someone else.

This week's piece breaks down what the research found, why dentistry specifically has an AI citation advantage that medicine doesn't, and the three pages we'd fix first. If you're a practice owner, one question: when's the last time you actually read your own implant page?

Semrush confirmed this week that manipulated Google results have been quietly corrupting the data that SEO tools pull. That means rank tracking reports, keyword data, and traffic estimates from tools like Semrush, Ahrefs, and Moz may have been pointing you in the wrong direction this quarter.

The fix isn't complicated. Go open Google Search Console. That's first-party data straight from Google about your own site. If it tells a different story than your rank tracker, believe Search Console.

We're telling every client the same thing right now: cross-reference before you make any SEO moves based on a single tool report.

What's one SEO decision you've made recently that you'd want to double-check with fresh eyes?

Semrush tracked 400 commercial searches and found Google AI Overviews now show up on 88% of them. A year ago it was 45%. The searches that still show the old blue-link experience represent 3% of search volume.

If your customers are searching for what you do, an AI is probably answering them before they ever reach your website.

One move you can make this week: open ChatGPT or Gemini, type in the searches your best customers would actually type, and write down who gets cited. That list tells you more about your marketing situation than any rank report.

Is your business showing up when you run that test?

A family restaurant in Spring, Texas lost its only server and couldn't keep begging someone to show up. So the owner spent $300 on an AI host named Haniya. She speaks seven languages, answers calls after hours, and works alongside QR ordering so the kitchen staff now keeps 100% of tips. The restaurant is now saving $9,650 a month, reported by The Cool Down.

We work with restaurant owners across Arizona on exactly this kind of front-of-house problem. The tool that saves you $9,000 a month usually costs about $10 a day.

If one person not showing up can seriously hurt your Tuesday, what would you do about it?

An energy company nobody outside its industry knows just grew organic traffic 50% in twelve months and now shows up in 61% of AI search responses. They didn't rank better on Google. They restructured their content to answer the questions AI systems actually pull from when making recommendations.

We call the gap between what AI needs to recommend your business and what your website actually says the Answer Gap. Most local businesses in Phoenix have a big one.

This week: open ChatGPT and type the question your best customer asks before hiring someone like you. How many times does your business come up?

A bank just disclosed AI costs of $2,130 per employee per month. The CFOs who approved these tools are scrambling after surprise invoices they didn't see coming.

Here's the one thing to do this week: pull up every AI tool your business is paying for and sort them into two columns, fixed monthly fee or consumption-based. Anything consumption-based gets a spending cap set before Friday. Most platforms have the setting built in. Most people never turn it on.

The same billing behavior that blindsided a Wall Street finance team is available at your scale too.

Which of your AI tools could send you a bill you didn't expect?

A restaurant in Singapore saved 15 to 20 hours a week with AI, and none of it involved a chatbot or a social media tool. They put it on dishwashing logistics, delivery routing, and shift scheduling. The boring stuff nobody brags about.

The lesson is simple: one AI tool saves you minutes. A dozen tools, each saving a few minutes on something that repeats every day, saves you hours. We call it the stacking principle, and it works whether you run a restaurant, a catering operation, or a small team of any kind.

Start with a list of the five most repetitive tasks your team does every week. Pick one. Try it differently.

What's the most repetitive task your team does that you've never once stopped to question?

Yelp just started calling restaurants on behalf of customers. Their new AI feature, Check for Me, dials your front desk, asks about wait times, and texts the diner the result before they decide where to go. The customer never talked to you. An AI agent evaluated your phone experience and made a recommendation based on what it heard.

One thing you can do this week: call your own restaurant at 7pm on a Friday from a number nobody there recognizes. Count the rings. Listen to the greeting. Ask about the wait. That's what Yelp's agent is about to hear.

If you called your own place right now, cold, as a stranger, would you walk through the door?

Toast just released real AI usage data from thousands of restaurants, and one number stopped us cold: 53% of all AI queries happen during peak lunch or dinner service, not the next morning.

Managers aren't using AI to plan the future. They're using it to fix the present, in the middle of service, from their phones.

There's a concept in here we call the two-clock problem: the gap between when something goes wrong and when you find out about it. That gap is what it costs you, in comps, in table time, in overtime you didn't catch until Friday.

If your managers can't get a real-time answer about labor or sales during a dinner rush, that's the thing worth fixing first.

What's the longest you've gone before finding out something went sideways on a busy night?

Starlink's AI call center just confirmed something every local business owner needs to sit with: 20,000 calls a day, 70% resolved without a human, and one in four sales calls closed before the caller hangs up.

The AI issues credits, ships hardware, and answers questions. At $0.08 per minute, the math against a fully loaded front desk employee is not close.

We've been building AI receptionists for local businesses for a couple of years now, and the objection we still hear most is "our clients want a real person." Starlink's customers wanted that too. Seventy percent of them got their problem solved anyway.

Quick exercise: what are the five questions your phone staff answers most? If three of them are factual and repeatable, you already have a use case.
