Growing up my dad has been described in the news as a ‘Boise legend,’ the ‘Boise Godfather of Sushi’, a ‘Sushi Master,’ and now he’s officially retiring.

For folks who may not know, my parents opened the first Japanese restaurant in Downtown Boise 33 years ago. They closed that location after 26 years, and now they’ve sold their Meridian location of 14 years as my dad retires.

I’m so proud of what my parents have accomplished over the years! They paved the way for so many in the Treasure Valley. ❤️

SHIGE IS RETIRING: From sushi to sake to you, for the past 33 years, Shige’s has been more than a restaurant, it has been our home. A place where we’ve shared incredible meals with you, created memories and celebrated milestones. A place where we’ve watched your family grow, just as you’ve watched ours, and now after more than three decades, it is time for us to close our doors as Shige officially retires.

Words can’t describe how grateful we are for this community and the relationships we’ve built over the years- especially those of you who came in as customers but turned into friends and family over the years. We are beyond thankful!

As we get ready to officially close our doors, we can’t help but reflect on the incredible years, and to think it all started with a risk.

Shige and his wife Debbie opened Shige Japanese Cuisine, the first Japanese restaurant in downtown Boise in 1992. That restaurant was later followed by Shige Express, Shige Japanese Steakhouse, and Shige Saketini Bar, which also featured his French Japanese menu. What you might not know is, Shige was trained in the French Japanese cuisine before he started making sushi.

Debbie and Shige closed their Boise restaurants 26 years later, but not before opening Shige Express in Meridian in 2011. As a Japanese native, Shige wanted to share his culture with the Treasure Valley, and we are truly grateful for your support over the years.

While this chapter of our lives is ending, our love for you and the community is forever. Shige Express Meridian will serve its last meal on June 27th. Come say goodbye before then and make one last memory with us before the new owners take over.

Thank you Idaho for 33 years of memories. We will cherish them all. It has been an absolute privilege to serve you.
