👩🏻🏫A little history: The horseshoe sandwich is an iconic, hearty open-faced meal created in 1928 at the Old Leland Hotel in Springfield, Illinois. It features thick toasted bread topped with a choice of meat, a heavy pile of french fries, and a rich, warm cheddar-based cheese sauce.History and ConceptCreated by chef Joe Schweska as a signature regional comfort food.
Named the "horseshoe" because the original cut of bone-in ham resembled a horseshoe, the french fries represented the horseshoe nails, and the hot metal sizzle platter acted as the blacksmith's anvil.Users on Facebook note a general consensus that it is an indulgent, knife-and-fork meal deeply tied to Midwestern diner culture.
