Remembering Joe Finley
July 16, 1952 – July 16, 2017

Nine years ago today, Beale Street lost one of its true originals.

If you ever spent time on Beale, chances are you crossed paths with Joe Finley. For years, he captured visitors from around the world with his pencil sketches, turning a simple sheet of paper into a keepsake that people carried home across the globe.

Later, Joe became a familiar face at the front door of Blues City Cafe. His smile, quick wit, and unmistakable personality welcomed countless guests before they ever took their first step inside. To many, meeting Joe became just as memorable as the music, the barbecue, and the street itself.

Joe wasn’t just an artist. He was part of the soul of Beale Street—a man who made strangers feel like friends and left people with memories that lasted long after their trip to Memphis ended.

Today we remember his talent, his kindness, his humor, and the countless lives he touched with nothing more than a pencil, a conversation, and a genuine smile.

Rest easy, Joe. Your art lives on, your stories live on, and your place in Beale Street history will never be forgotten.
