If you love California red wine but rarely venture into the French section of the wine shop, this tasting was made for you.

For this edition of Jim’s Picks, Jim is choosing four red wines he thinks are worth putting head-to-head: two from California and two from France. We’ll taste them side by side and explore how winemakers on opposite sides of the Atlantic can create dramatically different wines from similar grapes and styles.

And don’t worryβ€”this isn’t going to be a stuffy lesson in French wine.

It’s simply a chance to pour four great reds, compare them, talk about what makes each one interesting, and maybe discover that French wine isn’t nearly as intimidating as it sometimes seems.

CALIFORNIA VS. FRANCE

California reds are easy to love. They’re often bold, ripe, fruit-forward and generous, with plenty of flavor right from the first sip.

French reds can be a different experience. Depending on the region and wine, you may find more earthiness, savory character, acidity, structure and subtlety. Rather than putting the fruit front and center, French wines often make you look for everything happening around it.

Neither approach is necessarily betterβ€”and that’s exactly what makes this tasting fun.

Jim will select two California reds and two French reds that give us a great opportunity to compare the different styles side by side.

We’ll talk about the grapes, regions and winemaking behind each bottle, but mostly we’ll do what wine drinkers actually enjoy doing: taste them and decide which ones we like best.

You may leave even more convinced that California makes your favorite reds.

Or Jim might just send you home looking at the French wine aisle a little differently.

Either way, you’ll taste four bottles personally selected by Jim, learn a little something along the way, and have a pretty good excuse to spend Sunday afternoon drinking great red wine in The Cellars.

No refunds due to limited seating.

Gin. Tonic. Ice. Citrus. How hard can it be?

Turns out, there’s a lot more to a great Gin & Tonic than simply pouring two ingredients over ice.

Tonight, we’re turning The Cellars into a G&T cocktail lab.

We’ll start with a classic London Dry Gin and experiment with all the variables that can completely change the drink:

🍸 Premium bottled tonic vs. tonic syrup + fresh sparkling water
πŸ‹ Different citrus and garnishes
🧊 Ice and dilution
βš–οΈ Gin-to-tonic ratios β€” 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and beyond
πŸ₯‚ Sweetness, bitterness and carbonation

The big question of the night: Can tonic syrup actually make a better Gin & Tonic than premium bottled tonic water?

We’re going to find out.

This won’t just be a tasting where you sit back and drink what we pour. You’ll taste, compare and experiment until you figure out exactly how YOU like your G&T.

By the end of the night, you’ll know the gin, tonic, ratio, ice and garnish you prefer β€” and how to recreate your perfect Gin & Tonic at home.

Two ingredients. A surprising number of variables. One goal:

🍸 Make the best Gin & Tonic you’ve ever had.

Join us TONIGHT in The Cellars!
Only a few seats remain, so grab yours and come experiment with us.

California red wine is about a lot more than Cabernet Sauvignonβ€”and this Sunday, we’re opening four bottles that prove it.

Join us in The Cellars on Sunday from 1:00–2:30 PM as we taste four very different sides of California red wine:

🍷 2016 Booker Fulldraw – A bold Paso Robles RhΓ΄ne-style blend of Grenache, Syrah and MourvΓ¨dre, packed with dark fruit, blackberry, licorice, chocolate and mineral character.

🍷 2016 Mad Hatter Red Blend – An aged Napa Valley Bordeaux-style blend with plum, raspberry, fig, cherry, cocoa and baking spice. Ten years of bottle age makes this one especially interesting to taste today.

🍷 2019 Frog’s Leap Merlot – A beautifully structured Rutherford Merlot with cherry, plum, earthy character and plenty of freshness. If you think Merlot is always soft and simple, this may change your mind.

🍷 2021 VezΓ©r β€œLizzy” Cabernet Sauvignon – A full-bodied Suisun Valley Cabernet with ripe fruit and structure that earned Gold at the 2025 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

The fun of tasting these wines side by side is finding out which one surprises you. You may walk in expecting Cabernet to be your favorite and leave talking about the Merlotβ€”or discover that Paso Robles RhΓ΄ne blends are exactly your style.

Four wines. Four different sides of California. One great Sunday afternoon in The Cellars.

🎟️ Seating is limited, so reserve your spot and come taste California with us!
