Single malt whiskey is often associated with Scotland, but its story has become much larger.

For this tasting, we are bringing together four distinctive single malts from Japan, the United States, Scotland, and Ireland. Each begins with malted barley, yet each producer creates something entirely different through its climate, distillation methods, cask choices, and sense of place.

Produced at Kurayoshi Distillery in Japanโ€™s Tottori Prefecture, Matsuiโ€™s single malts are known for combining a polished malt character with unusual Japanese cask influences, creating whiskey that is elegant, aromatic, and distinctly different from traditional Scotch.

Westland has spent more than a decade exploring what American single malt can become when it reflects the ingredients and landscape of the Pacific Northwest. Garryana 10 is their first age-stated whiskey and is matured for ten years.

The Glenrothes represents the traditional Scottish foundation of this tasting. Located in Speyside, the distillery is especially known for fruit-forward spirit and the influence of sherry-seasoned oak. This single malt has matured for 15 years in European oak casks seasoned with sherry.

Limavady brings the Irish interpretation of single malt to the table. Made from 100% malted Irish barley, the whiskey is triple distilled, matured in first-fill bourbon barrels, and finished in Pedro Ximรฉnez sherry casks.

JIMโ€™S NOTES
Japan brings precision and delicacy. Westland uses local grain and native Pacific Northwest oak to create something unmistakably American. Glenrothes gives us the depth and maturity of a classic 15-year-old Speyside whisky. Limavady shows how Irelandโ€™s triple distillation and creative barrel finishing can produce a softer but still richly flavored single malt.

To sip Barrel Proof is to experience Bourbon in its purest form: uncut, straight from the barrel, and without chill filtering. Each bottle is hand labeled with its unique proof and batch number, but the nose, taste, and finish are pure Elijah Craig.

A bottle of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof captures one particular group of barrels at one particular moment. The recipe may remain the same, but the proof, oak influence, texture, sweetness, and overall personality can change dramatically from batch to batch.

JIMโ€™S NOTES
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof has always been one of the bottles I look forward to tasting whenever a new batch is released. The basic formula stays familiar, but every batch seems to have its own personality.

I have saved several older releases because bottles like these become much more interesting when they are opened together. Tasting one batch by itself can be excellent. Tasting four releases spanning six years gives us the chance to understand what makes each batch different.

We will taste these, compare notes, rank the four releases, and know that everyone in the room will have their favorite. I have my expectations, but I am interested to see whether the oldest, the highest proof, or one of the more balanced releases wins the room.

WHAT WE WILL BE TASTING
Jim has selected four batches that span 6 years of releases with proofs as high as 131 and as low as 121. The ages are 9 -13 years. The magic is tasting them side by side and experience what time, craftsmanship, and barrels do to bourbon.

I wanted to do this tasting because Scotch deserves a second chance.

Some people try Scotch once, get hit with too much smoke, too much iodine, too much peat, or the wrong bottle at the wrong time, and they decide Scotch is not for them. That is usually not the fault of Scotch. It is the fault of the introduction.

This lineup is different.

We are not pouring basic entry-level bottles and hoping people โ€œget it.โ€ We are putting serious whisky in the glass: 17, 25, 30, and 25 years old. These are bottles with maturity, balance, texture, and depth. You will taste smoke, but also fruit. Oak, but also sweetness. Sherry, coastal character, spice, leather, chocolate, and long finishes that keep changing after each sip.

This is the tasting for people who already love Scotch, but it is also for the people who think they do not. If your first Scotch experience did not work, this is the redo.
