There is a specific moment in a stack of pancakes when the butter has gone soft but not yet liquid, and the syrup you poured too generously has begun working its way down the sides, pooling on the plate in a way that guarantees the bottom pancake will be the best one. Good pancakes are barely food, structurally speaking, flour and air held together by optimism, which is why they can absorb an amount of maple syrup that would be alarming in any other context. You cut through all three layers at once, because cutting one at a time is a rookie mistake and the corner piece is the whole point. By the fourth bite you're slowing down, not because you're full, but because you can already see the end of the stack and you're not ready for it.

At MoonShadow, the family table is always the loudest one in the room. Everyone's talking over everyone, someone's flagging the server for another round of bread before the entrées land, and the same story gets told again with a detail that wasn't there last time, corrected immediately by three people. The food is genuinely good, but it isn't the point. What sticks with you later isn't what anyone ordered, it's the moment the whole table laughed at once, and how it went on longer than it should have, and how nobody wanted to be the first to say it was getting late.
