After a long hiatus, one of our first bespoke releases is back from the legendary Sigri Estate in Papua New Guinea. If you’ve been waiting for its return, the time has come. If you’ve never had it, welcome to one of coffee’s greatest oddballs.
BIG RED is Maragogipe, a naturally occurring mutation of Typica that’s famous for producing some of the largest coffee beans on Earth. Maragogipe are often called elephant beans, and for good reason. Massive cherries. Massive beans. Tiny yields. The plant sacrifices quantity for character, producing up to 25% less coffee than most cultivars.
That’s exactly why we love it.
Grown at 1,600 meters in the volcanic soils of Sigri Estate and traditionally washed and dried on raised beds. This coffee is all elegance with just enough swagger. Bright tropical fruit leads the way, followed by notes of petrichor, delicate spices, grapefruit citrus, savory swagger, and a clean finish that reminds you why Papua New Guinea continues to be one of the world’s most underrated coffee origins.
BIG RED isn’t loud because it’s over-processed or chasing trends. It’s loud because nature decided to make one coffee plant bigger than the rest and somehow packed even more personality inside.
This has quietly become a Heady Cup fan favorite, and every time we bring it back, it disappears just as quickly as it arrived.
