A LOOK BACK

The grand residence at the base of Mattituck Inlet, christened Windamere in 1890, opened its doors to summer guests at the dawn of the twentieth century, as the North Fork became a sought-after destination for city dwellers. The property boasted a dance hall with piano, a tennis court, a bowling alley, and a fine dock built for excursions. The lush and bountiful grounds were graced

by a gentle wind flowing down the creek, and magnificent sunsets were presented nightly over the inlet. Windamere was known for delightful entertainment presented for the pleasure of guests and neighboring yacht clubs, most notably a 500-person singing society arriving by train for a midsummer performance on the great lawn. As we open the doors of Windamere to guests arriving by land and sea, we aim to capture the spirit of that bygone era: the excitement of arriving at this special destination, the warm welcome that greeted every guest, and the memorable experiences that followed.
