Good evening everyone, we hope you had a wonderful weekend! For our next Walnut Kitchen Sunday Series we are featuring Mossy Creek Mushrooms out of Jefferson City, Tennessee. Mossy Creek Mushrooms supplies our restaurants with its delicious array of mushrooms year round & we could not wait to feature them in our Sunday Series.

We were able to get a look inside of their facility and learn about the process of growing mushrooms and so much more! It is mind blowing to say the least when looking over all the types of mushrooms Mossy Creek has under its roof. From local forest to species of mushrooms from Asia, they seem to have it all. It's truly amazing that each mushroom starts from a culture and depending on the species, takes up to/or over a year to form the final product we see. The shapes and colors of these fungi through every form of their growth is magically fascinating. That being said, there is a science to every step of this process that the staff at Mossy Creek Mushrooms has spent years learning and developing.

A great way to learn more about Mossy Creek Mushrooms is to visit their YouTube channel. You can also purchase kits from their website if you ever wanted to try and grow your own mushrooms. Mossy Creek is even shipping some of our Appalachian mushroom species internationally. Of course if you have ever wanted to give their creations a taste, look no further than our menu at the Walnut Kitchen. Make sure to look out for our next Walnut Kitchen Sunday Series and have a great week!

We are back with another Walnut Kitchen Sunday Series. This week features Horn of Plenty Marketplace in Maryville Tennessee. We had the pleasure of speaking with Dwayne and getting a little background information on this local business that has been a staple since 1985.

"One thing you will notice is how the store is always changing in appearance". This is a testament to the farmers and local purveyors that keep Horn of Plenty’s inventory ever changing with the seasons. Gone is the feeling of the big chain stores from the moment you park and head into the store. When shopping at Horn of Plenty you seem to be suspended in a moment of a simpler time that just feels like home. From fresh produce, meats, dairy, nuts, beans, candy, and everything in between (including a seasonal nursery) you can’t help but to appreciate the selection of goods and character Horn of Plenty effortlessly delivers. That character is a product of the generational farmers that help make Horn of Plenty such a great part of our local community.

The Walnut Kitchen, just like Horn of Plenty, understands the importance of keeping the “farm” aspect of food alive in these times. It is safe to say that if you have had any fruits or vegetables in one of our dishes you have experienced the quality products of Horn of Plenty. With the Fall season approaching, we can’t wait to incorporate more of this year's fresh products into our menu. Stopping in for yourself is a must! As always, their information is listed below and keep an eye out for our next Walnut Kitchen Sunday Series.

Hello all! We are back with another Walnut Kitchen Sunday Series, featuring Benton’s Smokey Mountain Country Ham. Benton’s has been a local staple for years in Madisonville Tennessee. We had the privilege to speak with Allan Benton and learn how this once small operation has expanded into a household name in the culinary world.

Benton’s was founded in 1947 by the late Albert H. Hicks, a dairy farmer who began curing and selling country ham out of a block building. Allan Benton and his employees have honed the dry-curing of ham and bacon into a culinary art and have catapulted the products from a simple breakfast mainstay into the world of gourmet cooking. When speaking with Allan you can sense hard work, determination, and gut instinct are key qualities to his character. He explained that for years even though he was doing what he loved, business was less than booming. After a few years Benton’s experienced their first big “break”. Even though it was unexpected and met with some apprehension, Allan trusted his instinct and rolled from one break to another.

Today the Benton’s Smokey Mountain Country Ham storefront is located off highway 411. Here you can purchase their wide variety of pork products and fixings. If you are unable to visit the store in person, you can place an order through their website.

It is the dedication to quality that makes us proud to serve Benton’s here at the Walnut Kitchen. We promise you will not be disappointed in this one of a kind Appalachian flavor.

Until next time, have great week!

Last week the Walnut Kitchen’s Alex Gass had the honor to once again participate in the annual Bacon at the Bear event at Dancing Bear Lodge & Bistro. Bacon at the Bear celebrates Appalachian cuisine and highlights regional chefs, all while featuring Benton’s Bacon.

Although this event focuses on local chefs, artisans, and food there is a much bigger aspect to Bacon at the Bear. Each year, they partner with New Hope – Blount County Children’s Advocacy Center. New Hope provides a safe, child friendly space where professionals can come together to provide a coordinated and evidence-based plan on how to help the child. A portion of the proceeds from this event will directly benefit New Hope and the children they work with in Blount County.

If you would like to learn more about New Hope please visit their social media listed below! Make sure you keep you eye out for next years Bacon at the Bear and you too can experience local Appalachian cuisine & contribute to a great cause!

Good morning everyone! We are back with another Walnut Kitchen Sunday Series and this week we are featuring Sweetwater Valley Farms.

Tucked away in Philadelphia, Tennessee this dairy farm’s roots run deep into the land it sits upon. Dairy cows have been raised on this land for over the past century. It was not until the late 1990’s that the farm started to produce what it is known for today. In 1998 Sweetwater Valley Farms started producing cheese. Throughout the 2000’s the herd of cattle started to grow along with the varieties of cheeses that the farm produced. Ever evolving, Sweetwater Valley Farm became Tennessee’s first Lely XL Dairy Farm, milking 500 cows with Robotic Technology.

Taking a tour of Sweetwater Valley Farm is a must when visiting. You will be able to see the behind the scenes operations first hand and learn how this state of the art facility produces its top most quality products while being sustainable and humane. Make sure you stop by the café afterwards to try one of the delicious sandwiches or milkshakes offered along with visiting the Farm Store featuring a selection of local goods. You are encouraged to sample the cheeses offered at the Cheese Facility and the staff is more than kind and helpful.

It is the dedication to the community, ingenuity, and commitment to the craft that makes Sweetwater Valley Farm stand out to us here at the Walnut Kitchen. We proudly serve a selection of their products that make our dishes stand out from the rest. If you can not make it to the farm you can always experience the taste for yourself here at the Walnut Kitchen. Check out Sweetwater Valley Farm for yourself with the information listed below and as always, keep your eye out for our next Walnut Kitchen Sunday Series.

Have a great weekend!

Hello again, it is time for our next Walnut Kitchen Sunday Series! We hope everyone had a great weekend and is ready for the coming week. Today we are featuring Simpson's Meats.

If you have visited the Walnut Kitchen you already know that we are known for our dry aged beef. It is because of Simpson's Meats that we are able to offer such great selections year round. We had the opportunity to sit down with Jim & Jason and discuss the history and evolution of this family owned business.

Simpson's Meat was founded over one hundred years ago in Athens, Tennessee. The foundation of strong work ethic and family values is what has supported Simpson's Meats through five generations. Those tried and true qualities are responsible for propelling a dairy farm into what now is one of the top meat purveyors in East Tennessee. From local restaurants to grocery stores, Simpson's Meat provides nothing less than top quality product.

Speaking on the hardships the globe faced this past year, we learned how Simpson's took a less than ideal circumstance and worked it out. When the pandemic set in, Simpson's had to find a way to serve their community within what was happening around the world. In this, the Simpson's Meat store front came to fruition. Now Simpson's can physically exist in their community and provide a seamless online experience no matter where you are.

There is so much more to Simpson's Meats than the obvious. Meats, seafood, preserves, specialty salts, seasonings, sauces, and so much more are offered. There really is something for everyone whether you are a novice cook or a experienced chef. The quality of the meats and products offered simply cannot be highlighted enough. When in Knoxville visiting Simpson's Meats is a must and even if you can't make it in, experiencing Simpson's Meats for yourself is literally only a few clicks away.

Check Simpson's Meats out with the information provided below and of course you can always stop in for dinner at the Walnut Kitchen to taste the difference for yourself. Have a great week and we will be back next Sunday for another Walnut Kitchen Sunday Series!

We hope everyone out there is having a wonderful Fourth of July! For this Walnut Kitchen Sunday Series we present Special Growers out of Maryville Tennessee.

A week ago from today Special Growers hosted a beautiful dinner on their property that the Walnut Kitchen was lucky enough to cook for. "Who is Special Growers" you might ask. For those who don’t know, Special Grower's mission is to provide job training and employment opportunities to disabled young adults in Blount county.

A group of parents to several recently graduated high school special needs students initially formed Special Growers as the solution for a less than encouraging post graduation question and observation, “what’s next for my child?” and “there really isn’t much." Rather than allowing their disabled young adults to fall through the cracks of a work force not designed for them, these parents decided to take action and form the missing piece to the puzzle.

Special Growers was designed to offer a patient and understanding environment. The kind of environment that such youth of varying abilities needs to develop and reach their potential. Farming at Special Growers helps sharpen job skills that are not only useful in gardening but other professions as well. Special Grower's farm is committed to serve their local restaurants including the Walnut Kitchen with the highest quality flowers and produce. Even meeting chefs requests for same day delivery ensuring the freshest product possible.

If you ever find yourself in town and want to know more about Special Growers, stop by or give them a follow on their social media platforms to stay in tune with what is happening. Once again happy fourth of July and keep an eye out for the next Walnut Kitchen Sunday Series!

We are back this Sunday for another Walnut Kitchen Sunday Series!

This Sunday Series presents Tellico Grains Bakery. This past week we sat down with Anissa and Stuart Shull to discuss the humble beginnings of Tellico Grains Bakery and where they are now.

You know something special is happening the moment you walk through the door. What started off as a simple bakery has now evolved over time into a community staple. Among pastries and artisanal breads, you can also enjoy delicious pizzas, sandwiches, and drinks. You can also find local goods for purchase around the bakery from honey to handcrafted mugs.

The building the bakery stands in itself has so much character and history. It is amazing to know that Anissa and Stuart renovated themselves. At one point the building was a bank and now the vault is used for storage! It is in the little details like that which give this place so much charm and character. When standing in the kitchen next to the wood-fired brick oven (that was built by hand) it is hard to believe that a few years ago you could look up and see nothing but sky. This is such a true testament of what hard work and talent can achieve.

If you find yourself traveling through Tellico Plains, visiting the bakery is an absolute must! You can also taste their wonderful creations at the Walnut kitchen. The focaccia bread, sourdough bread, and cinnamon roll are just a few Tellico Grains favorites we serve. Make sure you check them out and stay tuned for new creations made possible through Tellico Grains Bakery.

Who would love to see our cheesecakes available here for dessert after a great dinner? Turtle cheesecake anyone?
My husband and I have eaten dinner here many times and always had a great experience with the food and service. Today was our first time for lunch, wonderful. We split a pear salad that was fresh and flavorful, the walnuts and cranberries were extra flavorful. We also shared the burger. Cooked to perfection, juicy with a light char, crispy bacon, cheese and soft bun! Fries crisp on the outside and tender inside! The menu is more limited at lunch, but there were a couple of special offerings. Service was outstanding, can't wait to return.
We celebrated my husband's birthday with dinner at The Walnut Kitchen and it was wonderful. Our server, Gabby, was the best and the food was delicious. We'll be back.💛💛
What a great Chef Table last Friday. Excellent experience. First rate food and service. Thanks Chef Alex.
Best steak ever!! Great food and atomosphere!!
I tried to leave a review on Resy, but there was a glitch, so here goes. I tell EVERYONE about this gem. I even told our flight attendant this week because she was looking for good food experiences for her extended stay in the area. I had the duck breast last night. It was amazing. Thank you, David. My birthday dinner was beyond perfect. The butcher block was a true treat. Love, love, love the Walnut Kitchen.
So ridiculously good!!
Please consider posting your Friday and Saturday Chef's Tasting Menu, so we would know what to expect at dinner. Thanks.
Great food and great staff.
