We’ve gained a lot of new followers lately, and one question we get asked just about every truck day is, “Where are you from?” So I figured it was probably time to do another little get to know us post.
My name is Jim Helms. I’ve lived in Marshfield for almost 20 years now. I grew up in Springfield, but moved out this way because we wanted to raise our kids in the country. Marshfield’s been a great place to call home.
I’ve owned a construction business for around 25 years, but cooking has always been something I loved too. Years ago I started smoking meat more as a hobby than anything. We always processed our own meats. Mostly venison and made sausage, so smoking meat just kind of became a natural extension of that. Turns out I was pretty good at it.
Over the years we’ve always enjoyed cooking for people — family get-togethers, fish fries, holidays, gatherings at the lake, whatever the occasion was. I’ve always liked feeding people and seeing folks enjoy good food made from scratch.
As I’ve gotten older, construction has gotten harder on the body, so Kettle & Que became a way to turn something I enjoy into the next chapter of life.
A lot of people ask about the name. “Kettle” comes from the homemade cooking side of things… the kitchen. Soups, chili, jambalaya, mac & cheese, smoked beans and all the stuff that goes with it. You will see more of those things during the cooler months. “Que” is the BBQ side. The smoked meats are incorporated into every “kettle bowl”.
We opened this truck in 2023, and this is now our third season. Honestly, I never expected it to grow the way it has, but Marshfield and the surrounding communities have supported us from day one and we’re thankful for every bit of it.
We still both work full-time jobs every day, so as much as we’d love to be out running the truck several times a week, it’s just not possible between work, catering, and everything else life brings. But we are planning for more truck days this season than we’ve ever done before, and we’re excited about that.
As long as people keep showing up, I’ll keep cooking.🔥
We appreciate every one of you.
