The Historical Society of Marshall County (HSMC) is co-sponsoring with Humanities Iowa the program “Jane Addams and the Hull House,” at 6:30 p.m., July 14, at The Binford House, 110 N. Second Ave., Marshalltown.
Noted humanities speaker and historical interpreter Helen Lewis will offer her first-person portrayal of Addams – a renowned advocate for youth.
Addams founded The Hull House in Chicago in 1889.
It was a refuge for neglected and abused youth.
Addams’ pioneering social work skills applied to youth was duplicated nation-wide for decades.
Importantly, Marshalltown native Jessie Binford worked as a trusted colleague with Addams for 43 years.
Binford retired to Marshalltown and lived in the Tallcorn Towers Hotel.
However, in her will, she dictated in 1930 that the family home which became known locally as “The Binford House” would not be sold or mortgaged and would be available for use by service clubs in Marshalltown.
“We are pleased to co-present this informative program about Jane Addams to Central Iowans at the historic Binford House,” said HSMC president Michelle Roseburrough.
“The Binford House was built in 1874 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It stands as a proud legacy to Jessie and the Binford family.”
The event is free-of-charge and open to the public. Seating is limited. Plenty of free-of-charge parking on North Second Avenue and a nearby public parking lot. For more information, contact HSMC at 641-752-6664 or [email protected]
