Did You Know?
Before modern highways and interstates, many visitors arrived in Marietta by steamboat — and some of those travelers would have seen the Lafayette Hotel standing proudly along the Ohio River shortly after its opening in 1918.
During the golden age of river travel, elegant river packets and sternwheelers carried passengers, freight, mail, and goods up and down the Ohio River. Marietta’s busy waterfront was filled with whistles, paddlewheels, and bustling docks as travelers stepped ashore to explore the city.
The Lafayette Hotel quickly became one of the premier places for river travelers to stay, offering beautiful accommodations and stunning river views in the heart of downtown Marietta.
Even today, the hotel’s location along the riverfront serves as a reminder of Marietta’s deep connection to the Ohio River and the era when riverboats ruled transportation across the region.
The spirit of the riverboat era still lives on at the Historic Lafayette Hotel — proudly known as Marietta’s Grand Riverboat Era Hotel.
