Interesting research from Pew, but ask any business owner at the shore and we could have told you that. It’s a shame, since there are so many important social, work, and life lessons learned through working as a teen, as well as learning to make money instead of dependency on parents. Most of our staff for the last 24 years have made lifelong friendships here, even if they live in a different state from their new friends. They learn the importance of punctuality, dependability, honesty, character, and hospitality. They are going to need these later in life, even if they are going to be a CPA, lawyer, Doctor, construction company owner, mom, dad, husband, wife, you name it. I had the pleasure and extreme honor of attending a wedding yesterday for a young lady who started working for me at 15 and is now 33 years old and a teacher. She still works during the summer and on weekends because it enriches her life. Three of our former staff were at her wedding. They all worked at different years, not at the same time, but were all friends through the same bride and we shared so many memories, laughs, and special moments from each summer. They are all successful now, and credit the dairy bar for putting in the building blocks that started them on their path. Priceless.
