As Banned Books Week comes to a close, we’re reflecting on a powerful reminder: the freedom to read is something we must actively protect. 📚✨

Books, like a good cup of coffee, are meant to wake us up, introduce us to new perspectives, and sometimes comfort us through challenging ideas. Censorship doesn't just limit what is on a shelf, it restricts whose stories are allowed to be told.

“If you only read the books everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.”

One common reason for banning The Wonderful Wizard of Oz….

Strong Female Leadership: Critics and early 20th-century traditionalists objected to Dorothy and other female characters acting as independent heroes and leaders.

Why is this book important for women? 👧🦸🏽‍♀️👱🏼‍♀️👩🏿👳‍♀️🙎‍♀️👩🏼‍🌾👩🏼‍🍳👩🏼‍🎤🧘‍♀️👮🏻‍♀️👩🏽‍✈️🦹🏼‍♀️🤸‍♀️👸🏼🤰🏽👩‍❤️‍👩⛹️‍♀️👩‍🦯‍➡️👩🏼‍🚀👩‍🏭👩🏼‍🎨🏊‍♀️👩‍🦼👩🏼‍🚒🚴‍♀️👩🏾‍🏫🏄‍♀️🤽‍♀️🚵‍♀️👩🏻‍⚕️👩🏽‍🎓👩🏽‍🔬👩🏽‍🔧🕵🏻‍♀️👷🏽‍♀️👩🏼‍⚖️🧗‍♀️

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz remains a landmark piece of literature for women because it serves as an early piece of feminist allegory that champions female autonomy, intellect, and leadership. Published at the turn of the 20th century, the book broke the traditional mold of fairy tales where female characters were typically passive damsels waiting for a prince.

"One of my greatest fears was the Witches, for while I had no magical powers at all I soon found out that the Witches were really able to do wonderful things."

Another banned book inspired drink to tickle your taste buds as we continue to celebrate banned book week and be slightly appalled at some that made the list 📚 ☕️

The Handmaid

The core message behind The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a stark political warning about how easily democratic rights, especially women's bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom, can be eroded step-by-step through the weaponization of religion, law, and language.

Totalitarianism does not require new inventions, it reuses history.

And remember ladies, Nolite te bastardes carborundorum!!! 💪
