Some pieces just belong here. Our newest Artist in Residence, Annie Rob, hunted down a vintage canvas and painted eight words across it: “the ocean called, it said stay another night.” She chose it because it’s exactly how a stay at Malibu Beach Inn feels. There’s never quite enough time.

Known as Painting in the Rude, Annie collects antique ephemera and reworks it with her own wordplay, the kind that makes you laugh and look twice. The London-born artist traded a career as a creative director for a life of self-expression, and her work has since appeared everywhere from Glamour UK to the Saatchi Gallery. You’ll find her piece in the lobby by check in, and if you fall in love with it, you can take it home.
