Contraband.

By five oโ€™clock, the hotel had begun to fill.

A salesman argued over his room key at the desk. Two women in traveling coats crossed the lobby without lowering their voices. Somewhere above them, a pipe knocked inside the wall.

The truck came through the alley without headlights.

Lefty waited until the driver killed the engine before opening the rear door. Three crates sat beneath a tarp, packed tight with straw and produce. One had split at the corner. The neck of a bottle showed through the wood.

โ€œYou said four,โ€ Lefty said.

The driver wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. โ€œRoad was expensive.โ€

โ€œSo is being late.โ€

Behind Lefty, Stella stood in the basement doorway with a ledger pressed against her waist. She looked at the driver, then at the broken crate.

โ€œBring them inside,โ€ she said. โ€œBefore someone decides to become curious.โ€

Not everything brought into the basement at Leftyโ€™s made it onto the official books.

Crates arrived after dark, filled with bottles, citrus, fruit, and flavors most people in Magnolia had never seen. Lefty hid them beneath the stairwell while Stella recorded every item in a ledger only the two of them could understand.

A few hours later, the bar upstairs looked perfectly dry. The shelves were nearly empty. A guest ordered โ€œcoffee,โ€ and Lefty quietly served something far more interesting in a plain cup and saucer.

Some secrets stayed in the cellar.

Not everything brought into the basements of Magnolia made it onto the official books.

Deep in the shadows, Lefty filled his cellar with bottles, fruits, and flavors no one could explain or trace. If a taste felt beautifully unfamiliar, it usually meant it had traveled a long way and arrived well after dark. While Lefty handled the deliveries, Stella quietly kept track of his illicit treasures, protecting his legacy one secret at a time.
