Mark Buxton - Southeastern Wildlife Habitat Services Producing top end bucks throughout the Southeast for 30 years I have planted and maintained more than 11,000 acres of food plots.

Known throughout the Southeast for improving deer herd quality and turkey numbers by improving habitat and nutrition quality. Previous instructor for Deer Steward I and Deer Steward II courses. In 1989, before it was thought possible, I became one of the first deer managers in the Southeast to implement a harvest strategy based on aging deer on the hoof. Clients throughout the Southeastern states with written management plans on properties ranging in size from 50 acres to 25,000 acres.

I’ve always been a fan of a late summer early fall crop of cowpeas. September and October are our two driest months of the year so while many crops are shutting down cowpeas can take the heat and dry soils. By the time cowpeas are done fall plots are well established.

I think 250 bags of seed will keep me busy for awhile.

Welcome to the backwoods of Magnolia, AL where you just unload in the middle of the road even if it’s on a hill with a sharp turn. You have to look for deer crossing the road, but also the barn or shed that might be just over the next hill.

I have a rule for removing management bucks like this one. You drop him through both shoulders as soon as he presents an ethical shot. You don’t wait to see if something better walks out. The lack of antler quality doesn’t make them stupid. On some of our intensively managed properties we are removing approximately 3 management bucks for every giant and I want them gone as soon as possible so we aren’t waiting.

This next few weeks from mid September through October 10th is one of my favorite times of the year. Posting bucks in full velvet and proving they are native South AL bucks shuts up a lot of people.
