Tumbleweeds Diner

Tumbleweeds Diner Former city slickers turned high country gourmands! Mom and pop roadside destination diner off Highway 60 in Magdalena, New Mexico. Food from scratch!
(3)

Smashed burgers, buttermilk fried hot chicken, and more. We do what we want! Tumbleweeds Diner is located on the west end of town of Magdalena, New Mexico off the historic Highway 60. The building was originally the Big Bear Cafe, but remained unoccupied for over a decade. In January 2020 Osiris Navarro and Michal Gola took a road trip to Magdalena and passed by the abandoned building on their way

back home to the Pacific Northwest. In February 2020 covid turned everyones lives upside down and Osiris and Michal had to close their thriving catering business due to a years worth of event cancellations. In April 2020, the couple remembered the abandoned cafe off Highway 60 and did their due diligence on acquiring the building. By July 2020 the couple moved to Magdalena, NM and got straight to work in revamping the once lively Big Bear Cafe. Through the help and support of family, friends, and neighbors, Tumbleweeds Diner was able to open by March 2021. The diner offers an authentic southwest, high country experience with sweeping views of the mountains, blue skies, and sunsets. The decor of the diner honors the culture and history of Magdalena featuring odds and ends from locals such as taxidermy from hunters, dusty saddles and worn out cowboy hats from ranchers, paintings and dreamcatchers from Navajo artisans of the Alamo reservation, ristras from chile farmers, etc. Tumbleweeds Diner is a casual eatery featuring a taste of the southwest; green chile cheeseburgers, spicy buttermilk fried chicken, enchiladas, and more. Family friendly, pet friendly on the patio. Plenty of parking for semi trucks, horse trailers, travel trailers. Come for the food and stay for the sunsets.

The people have spoken! NO DATA CENTER! A huge win, but we have to remain vigilant and keep talking about this. Hopefully this sets the precedent for the entire county, and state.

BREAKING NEWS: NM Tech halts controversial data center project
The university is pausing the massive development after facing significant community opposition.

“During the initial phase of this process we identified several material considerations that led both parties to mutually conclude that proceeding under the current framework is not the right path at this time,” NMT President Dr. Jackson wrote in a letter addressed to the NMT community.

Please consider donating! Tumbleweeds will be planning a series of fundraising events with other community members this summer / fall on our Sunday meetups / market where we will raffle off prizes, etc. which will go directly to this fund.

If you can’t spare any money as everything is so expensive right now at the very least read and do research about data centers and the negative impact it has on the environment, our water systems, food systems, entire communities.

Socorro County is fighting for its future and we need your help!!

New Mexico Tech is considering a deal with Jason Bak/Green Data to build a 2GW data center and industrial solar array behind M Mountain! Our aquifer, our acequias, our dark skies, our environment, our community’s cherished landscape, and so much more, are at risk! We are stewards of this land today, but what we do to with it will be handed down for generations to come. More than 4,000 people have already signed the Change.org petition demanding transparency, environmental protection, and responsible stewardship, but the fight now requires legal support to protect Socorro County from irreversible harm.

We are raising funds to secure independent legal counsel to challenge this project, and hold NMT and Green Data accountable to the laws and public processes meant to protect our home. Without legal representation, the community is at a severe disadvantage against a private developer and a university administration considering a dangerous project for the chance to make millions in rent on the land and risk the water we all need to survive!

Your contribution, whether $5 or $100, directly supports:

Legal review of the proposed land deal and contracts
Representation at NMT Regent's meetings
Assistance in engaging our state legislature
Filing fees, public records requests
& MORE!

Socorro County deserves a voice. Our water, our land, and our quality of life are not bargaining chips for profit! Together, we can protect Socorro County and ensure that decisions about our home are made transparently, responsibly, and with our community at the helm.

Thank you for standing with us.
