Southern Alliance for People & Animal Welfare - Safpaw

Southern Alliance for People & Animal Welfare - Safpaw SAFPAW believes in knocking down poverty obstacles that exist for those we serve and their pets.

The Southern Alliance for People and Animal Welfare (SAFPAW) is a local non-profit serving Davidson County by working to improve the quality of life in our community for people and pets in need. SAFPAW provides pet food, supplies, and veterinary care free of charge pet owners who are homeless, or living at or below the poverty level. Our weekly Spay/Neuter Transport picks up every Thursday morning

and brings each pet back that same evening. Animals are spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks and nails trimmed. In addition our weekly transport helps with basic wellness pet needs. Our homeless outreach program provides food, camping supplies, and other basic needs to those we serve. We also assist those looking to secure more permanent housing by helping with transportation, acquiring necessary IDs (such as social security card, state ID or drivers license, birth certificate, etc.), working through the application process, and everything in-between, including move-in day! SAFPAW is able to make a tremendous positive impact in the lives of people and pets throughout Davidson County, but only with the help of our generous and compassionate community. Swing by our page at Southern Alliance for People & Animal Welfare - SAFPAW and "Like" us to stay up to date on all of the amazing work being done every day. And don't forget to come check out our website too (www.safpaw.org) and consider making a donation so that we can all continue to build our community better and stronger every day!

I have a favor to ask! Stefanie and I were delivering meals today and one of our friends was so excited about telling us her plans! She is going to school to learn to be a chef, specializing in fancy pastries.

She mentioned that she was trying to save up for a mixer and I know how long that will take her. Now if you know me you know my heart is with people who have a dream and then get busy making it happen.

This one pictured is about $60. I am hoping that someone will give the dream she is actively working to make happen some legs.

I was in Franklin, KY for a last minute “urgent but small” spay/neuter transport. Some folks wait till the deadline to tell us their landlord will kick them out if their companion animal is not vaccinated and fixed. But “The Fix” folks always comes through for SAFPAW and I love them for that.

I decided to stick around, give myself a break and visit my favorite Franklin, KY coffee shop. As I was parking a man pulled up on his bike and went into an employment agency next door to the Millhouse Coffee Shop. With his backpack on his back and his cleanest dirty clothes he went inside.

If I ran an employment agency anyone pulling up on their bicycle would be hired and sent to the best jobs I could find for them.

It is hard to describe to you the effort I see some put into getting back on their feet. And when I see that it touches my heart in a mighty way.

This past Saturday was our SAFPAW Meals Day delivery. Our meals delivery day starts with our assembly team and ends with our delivery team. We call it our organized chaos Saturdays and we are truly a team.

You don’t see many pictures because during delivery we just don’t have the time to take pictures. And I’m going to be real here right now, I don’t take pictures very often because our time on the streets is sacred to me. And it seems so often to be disrespectful and intrusive to take pictures. There are moments to record but as often the moments we spend delivering lunch meals don’t lend themselves to taking pictures.

We see smiles when we pull up. We are consistent in the areas we serve and that is on purpose. Life on the streets is brutal, made more so since Tennessee decided to criminalize poverty and homelessness. But still we serve and since 2020 we have been dedicated to our Saturday deliveries of lunch meals.

This past Saturday we pulled up to a street corner where folks gather. We had a case of baby wipes someone donated and they are like gold to the folks we serve. A dear man we see every time we deliver just smiled when I told him we also had baby wipes and lunch meals. He just smiled and told me how thankful he was. My friend opened the pack and wiped his face and hands. And then he opened the lunch meal and he ate.

When we pull off to head to our next stop the people we serve stay with me. The next stop brought a beautiful woman who always hugs us all. She has the most joyful smile, no matter the pain that smile hides.

I am reminded that “there but for the grace of God go I”. Our team is so diverse in what we believe but what is consistent is that we believe in serving. And we believe that feeding a hungry belly is love showing out.

A little life was saved yesterday. All because of partnership. I was contacted by friends from Metro Social Services about a tiny kitten they found in their parking lot. No adult cats around and walking the entire area showed no cats or other kittens. Since MACC was unable to take the baby in I told them to bring the kitten to our sanctuary. And she was a tiny newborn.

Now our cat sanctuary is for adult cats but I knew we had more resources for this little one. Our partnership with MSS has housed so many of the people and families we serve so when I have the time to help them save a life you’d best believe we will.

This little kitten was only 2-3 days old. Her eyes were still closed and her umbilical cord still attached. We all have our areas where we serve best and little bitties are not our area. But my friend Polly with FLUFF, now newborns is where she works best.

So because MSS, SAFPAW and FLUFF were all in the same circle a little life now has a chance. Sometimes the role we play is to put the right folks together to save a life. And to make sure this little tiny baby kitten had a chance at life. As I was taking her to Polly I kept looking at this tiny life fighting to live. My heart just melted in a protective circle around a baby weighing ounces, not pounds.

She has a chance now. We all gave her this chance.

When you bring someone’s sweet girl back but she has cancer. And the three of us have an appointment to meet with Dr. Porter to talk about this sweet old dog.

Folks, our wellness fund is almost out but I have to follow this dog’s journey through. I’ve had to say no to so many and I gotta tell you that hurts.

We have our boots on the ground every day but the good we can do is just limited if our funding is dangerously low, and it is. Every time I say no a piece of my heart breaks away. And there are no other places to send the animals and folks we serve. We are all handling so much with so little.

SAFPAW has been leading the way in helping animals and their people since 2001. But we are needing your financial support as never before. If I took a salary right now I’d give it up because the need is so great.

Please help us say yes more. I promise you that while this sweet old dog won’t know you gave, she will know that we are able to do all that we can.

UPDATE! We have a foster and sweet Sophie is with Janet Grieco tonight. Thanks to everyone who shared and who cared.

I am widening my search for a foster home for this sweet little nugget! Her human will be in the hospital and needs a foster home from August 19 to September 9.

This sweet dog is spayed and UTD. She gets along with other dogs but is not a fan of cats. She is housebroken.

PLEASE text me at 615-474-8390 if you can give this little dog a temporary place to be loved and safe.

And yes, she also applied with Pawster.

Thank you!
