10/13/2026
October 13 is Indigenous Peoples Day in Wisconsin and 16 other states and the District of Columbia. When Governor Evers made the declaration for our state in 2019, he said it was toβin partβ"recognize the immense importance of the Native Nations to this state, and reaffirm the significance of the Native Nations' sovereignty, culture, and history."
Each fall, Madison Public Library and Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison welcome a variety of Native artists, storytellers, and community leaders into library spaces for a series of programs celebrating Indigenous people in and beyond Teejop (pronounced day-JOPE, meaning Four Lakes, or Madison). Beginning shortly after Indigenous Peoples' Day, Native folks from different nations lead programs highlighting both traditional and contemporary practices, stories, and community relationships.
In 2026, several presenters representing different Native tribes will lead programs throughout October and November with a focus on Native art, making, storytelling, and handicrafts. Program participants will get the chance to learn about and try hands-on crafts like beading and basket-weaving, as well as sampling Indigenous cuisine and hearing traditional stories.
