Alright everyone, here's the latest update on AMY
First, the good news: surgery was successful for what it was intended to do—an exploratory biopsy. The biggest victory is that we now know it is NOT cancer. For that, we're incredibly grateful.
The not-so-great news? The official diagnosis seems to be somewhere between "dense fibrous breast tissue" and "sorry, you're unlucky." Amy has multiple areas of dense, fibrous tissue that have been causing significant pain for nearly two years. Unfortunately, the current treatment plan we've been offered mostly consists of things like "drink less coffee" and "take more ibuprofen." As owners of a coffee shop, you can imagine how well that first recommendation went over. 😂
Over the last two years, these areas have continued to grow and become more painful. The lumps that were removed during surgery immediately relieved the pain in those specific spots, which was encouraging. However, there are still other painful areas that doctors are currently taking a "wait and watch" approach with.
We've gone through referrals, specialists, consultations, second opinions, and enough paperwork to clear an entire forest. We've been told "there's nothing we can do," "just monitor it," and even that this level of pain is something women sometimes experience. That answer has never sat well with us.
Amy wakes up most days already hurting. Even her "good" days aren't really pain-free days. Anyone who knows her knows she's tough as nails, but nobody should have to build their life around pain.
So after a lot of frustration, a lot of research, and a lot of conversations, we've decided we're going to take matters into our own hands and figure out a way to just pay for it ourselves. It is so frustrating to have insurance that is useless, they have the power to completely change someone’s life for the better or worse and far too often choose “the worse”. We've already reached out to another surgeon and have a consultation scheduled for a procedure that we believe will give Amy the quality of life she deserves.
The surgery will be a significant one, although thankfully it's expected to be outpatient. We're not sure exactly when it will happen yet, but it could be as soon as July.
When that time comes, we'll likely need to close the café for a few days while we get Amy through recovery. We'll do our best to schedule things in a way that minimizes closures because, well... apparently mortgages, electric bills, and groceries still expect to be paid. 😂
Once she's settled in and recovering comfortably at home, it'll be me and my little man holding down the fort at the shop.
We wanted to share this update because so many of you have checked in, prayed, encouraged us, and supported us through all of this. We appreciate every single one of you more than you know.
We'll continue to keep everyone updated as we learn more.
For now, our hours remain:
Tuesday–Friday: 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Saturday: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Thank you all for being part of our little café family. ❤️
