A lot of our visitors drop by after taking a tour at the Jack Daniel Distillery. A slow walking tour filled with stories and jokes is a wonderful way to 'walk off' lunch.

We hope if you haven't toured the Jack Daniel Distillery lately, that you'll consider stopping by and then taking in lunch here. The Jack Daniel Visitor Center and Distillery have their own page on Facebook where they share information about visiting and stories and photos from the Distillery. They even mention Miss Mary's from time to time. We hope you'll check them out and maybe even give them a like.

Here in Lynchburg we like to say that 'September is Jack's birthday!' Since we don’t know Jack’s exact birthday, in Lynchburg we celebrate his birthday any day in September. And this September we have big plans.

We hope you’ll consider stopping by the Jack Daniel Distillery for a tour and then visiting us for lunch. And don't forget to check out Jack's Birthday Celebration events. This year they include Breakfast at Bobo's. Cheers and here’s to Mr. Jack!

Today is the first day of fall. And although we may not have pumpkin spice on the menu, we do have this great recipe for Jack's Pumpkin Patch Squares that will spice up your week. We hope you'll give it a try and let us know what you think.

2 cups self-rising flour
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
4 eggs, beaten
1 cup oil
2 cups pumpkin puree
2 tablespoon Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Wh***ey
2 teaspoon vanilla

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9X13 inch baking pan. Combine flour, sugar, and cinnamon in a large bowl. Stir in eggs, oil, pumpkin, wh***ey, and vanilla until smooth. Pour the batter into the greased baking pan. Bake 30-35 minutes or until lightly browned, firm on the top, and the edges begin to pull away from the sides of the pan.

Cool and enjoy with cream cheese frosting or a sprinkling of cinnamon paired with a cup of coffee and a great conversation with a friend.

It has been a tradition at Miss Mary Bobo's to offer our visitors coffee at the end of their meal along with dessert. Over the years so many of our friends have asked how they could take some of our coffee home with them that a few years ago we began offering it in our Gift Shop.

If you're interested in our coffee, just give our Gift Shop a call: (931) 759-7394. Our coffee is available in bags (ground) or k-cups. And we can ship anywhere in the US. So now you can enjoy an official cup of Miss Mary's coffee from the comfort of your own living room or kitchen. You might even want to whip up some Lynchburg Baked Apples for the full experience. The recipe is in the comments.

Quite a few folks reached every year asking us about tailgate recipes. So we thought we'd share one of our favorites, Miss Mary's Hot Pimento Cheese Dip. It's great as a dip, on crackers, or as a quick sandwich. You might even be tempted to eat it by the spoonful.

8 ounces (2 cups) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
4 ounces cream cheese, cut into small chunks
¼ cup mayonnaise
1 jar (4 ounces) diced pimentos, drained
Spoonful of sugar
Dash of hot pepper and/or Worcestershire sauce

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Combine the cheeses, mayonnaise, pimientos, sugar, and hot sauce/Worcestershire sauce in a small glass baking dish. Bake 20-30 minutes or until bubbly. Stir once halfway through cookies. Let cool and enjoy with family and friends. Pairs well with weekends in front of the television, tailgates, picnics, and long talks around the kitchen table.

We were proud to host author Tamera Alexander for lunch last week. Tamera recently released a historical fiction novel called "In These Hills," which follows a woman who moves to Lynchburg, stays at Miss Mary’s Boarding House, and works at Jack Daniel’s.

Tamera joined us for lunch today alongside Mike Northcutt, who assisted her with her historical research. Tamera will be back this Saturday, September 19 for a book signing from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. if you'd like to drop by.

If you're looking for a sweet treat for the last days of summer, we hope you'll give our Southern Biscuit Shortcake a try.

It works well with any fresh fruit that you may have in your garden or that you pick up at your favorite farmer's market or with the jam of your choice.
Southern Biscuit Shortcake

2 cups self-rising flour
3 tablespoons sugar
½ cup butter, cut into small pieces
¾ cup milk
Butter for spreading on the shortcakes
6 cups sweetened fresh berries, sliced peaches, warm apples or the fresh fruit spread of your choice
Whipped cream

Heat the oven to 450 degrees. Combine the flour and sugar in a medium mixing bowl. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the milk and stir just until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface just until smooth. Roll out the dough to ½ inch thickness. Cut it with a floured cutter into small squares. Place on a baking sheet about one inch apart and bake about 10 minutes or until golden brown. Split and butter the shortcakes. Fill and top with sweetened fruit and whipped cream.
