Our Tasting Shop next door offers over 150 domestic and international cheeses, 100+ curated bean-to-bar and artisan chocolates, plus packaged housemade foods, pantry items, Tastingwares, gifts, and all of our wines for you to take home and enjoy. This week we have a local favorite as our Cellar Gem: 2014 Mount Eden Estate Chardonnay, Santa Cruz Mountains, California 100% Chardonnay

2014 was a drought year of extreme dimension. As winegrowers, Mount Eden feared what to expect with only fourteen inches of rain to carry the vines through the long growing season. This was unprecedented in their seventy-year history as a wine estate They cut way back at pruning and reduced the crop by 50%.

Harvested in mid-August, the fruit was surprising, with full acidity and flavor. This Chardonnay has aromas that are penetrating with lemon, hazelnut, and gardenia blossom. It is invigorating on the palate, with flavors of lemon, earth, and pear. Super long on the finish.

In honor of National Pinot Noir day we’re celebrating all week with our Cellar Gem selection!

2022 Michel Gros, Clos des Réas, 1er Cru,
Vosne-Romanée Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France
100% Pinot Noir

The Clos des Réas is located on the hillock that overhangs the small Réas valley. The geological stratum of the subsoil is a ‘Salmon conglomerate’ on the Oligocene strata, with a large quantity of limestone blocks alternated with marls. This soil profile, together with the slope, ensures excellent drainage. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 50-70% is new.

Aromatically the wine has notes of brambly berry fruits, spiced with cinnamon and cloves, as well as a hint of thanksgiving herbs. On the palate, the wine has red and black currants as well as tight but balancing tannins.

White wines from López de Heredia are legendary, and Viña Gravonia rightfully earns its place. The 2016 Blanco Crianza Viña Gravonia, 100% Viura sourced from the Gravonia vineyard in Rioja Alta, underwent four years of aging in old foudres followed by an additional four years in bottle. This yellow wine with a subtle golden sheen features aromas of peach and fennel, accompanied by a floral tea note and a delicate layer of oak. Dry and refreshing, perfect for a summer evening like tonight!
