After 34 years, Los Angeles’ Landmark “Sky's Gourmet Tacos” is set to Close their historic dine-in restaurant on Pico Boulevard; But Catering Business is to Continue.
Founded by Barbara “Sky” Burrell in 1992, Sky’s Gourmet Tacos is considered by many to be the birthplace of the Fusion Taco, now so popular nationwide. Sky’s has been honored by the public, City Of Los Angeles, three Mayors and many Critics, including Legendary Los Angeles Times food critic Jonathan Gold, who praised Sky's Gourmet Tacos as serving "Tacos like mom used to make, unless mom happened to be Mexican. Soulful as hell". He championed the Mid-City establishment for its unique "Mexican, with a splash of soul" concept created by African American owner Barbara “Sky” Burrell and the fusion movement she virtually started in Los Angeles.
Sky's Gourmet Tacos built its legacy on this signature blend of Southern soul food and Mexican ingredients, featuring popular items like their famous shrimp, steak, and turkey tacos, as well as extensive vegan and vegetarian options.
Sky’s, located at 5303 West Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, will close its doors on August 15th, 2026.
“After many years of serving the Los Angeles community, Sky's Gourmet Tacos has announced that its restaurant will be closing on Pico Boulevard. This decision marks the end of an important chapter in the Sky's Gourmet story. Your encouragement and patronage have meant more than words can express. While our Pico restaurant is closing, Sky's Gourmet Catering will continue to serve the community. This is not simply a sad goodbye to a location; it's a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make Sky's Gourmet Tacos a beloved part of Los Angeles. And who knows?
