The episode dives into the chaotic often-debated origin of stories of chicken wings. The show highlights how, while America was obsessing over Buffalo wings, a parallel fried chicken phenomenon was taking over Japan and eventually crossing over into American food culture. (The Secret History of FuRaiBo's Wings) The Origin Story: FuRaiBo is the undisputed birthplace of Tebasaki (Japanese style deep-fried chicken wings) The Messy" Accident: Left with only chicken wings which at the time were discarded or used for soup stock, the founder's wife Tomiko began deep-frying them. To move the product, she secretly lied to customers that they were fresh out of half chickens and got them to try the wings instead. FuRaiBo became a phenomenon transforming Nagoya, Japan into a global chicken Capital. FuRaiBo later expanded to the United States cementing a legacy in California (with famous locations like Sawtelle) and introducing a different flavor profile to America's hot-sauce-dominated wing culture.

When FuRaiBo opened in Japan, the main product they were selling to their customers were half chickens. One day Tamiko Otsubo (one of the founders wife pictured top 4th from the left) was walking around the area and saw that the butcher shop had a mountain of chicken wings with the sign that said, it was free for anybody to take. That's when the idea clicked and she took the whole thing. To promote the chicken wings, unbeknownst to her husband Masao, she'd fib to the customers that they were all out of half chickens and recommended them to try their chicken wings instead. It took about a year for it to catch on and the rest is history.
