Haifa's Topanga Fire Story
Now that Topanga Canyon and the Malibu areas are being repopulated after the Fire, we'd like to share this little story about our involvement with the Topanga Canyon fire. It was scary, but it ended well.
Here's what happened.
Many months before the fire, we received a catering order from one of our regular customers. The customer wanted us to cater his wedding - for 200 guests.
The menu was arranged and the delivery date was to be Friday November 1 at 3PM.
We prepared the food on Friday morning. When everything was ready, we started loading the vehicles. There was so much food that it took two vehicles (SUVs) to carry all the food,.
Then at 2PM, just as we were loading up the vehicles, we saw a press report that told us that Topanga Canyon was being evacuated immediately. People living in Zones 1-6 were to proceed north to the San Fernando Valley, and people living in Zones 7-9 were to proceed south to PCH then head EAST.
So we had to make a decision. Do we try and get into Topanga Canyon? Will we be able to get out? Do we risk losing the food? Do we risk losing our lives? We had to make a quick decision.
So we checked with and the . Topanga Canyon was definitely being evacuated. It would be dangerous to proceed.
So we made a decision: unload the food, put it back in the refrigerator, and ask the client what he wanted us to do.
Turns out our decision not to proceed to Topanga Canyon was the right one. On Saturday, the client secured a new location - in Brentwood. He instructed us to bring the food to the new location. So we loaded up the two vehicles and took the food out to Brentwood. There were no more incidents, and the wedding reception went smoothly - and everyone enjoyed Haifa's wonderful catering.
