In 1948, when Dittmer was just 12 years old he started working at his family's delicatessen in Hamburg, Germany. After working in several grocery stores and butcher shops, Dittmer and his wife Margaret Bubert decided it was time to open up their very own small business, Dittmer's Gourmet Meats & Wurst-Haus. Dittmer's collection of recipes were shaped from his German roots as well as many mentors he met along the way. His passion and drive of making quality sausages, lunch meats, and smoke meats led to many awards and loyal Customers. Today, Dittmer's legacy is carried on in Los Altos, California by his daughter Petra Silva.

Our Oktoberfest Bier Wurst started as a 25-lb test batch and went on to sell 100 lbs in its first week — a first for one of our new seasonal sausages.

We sold out… so we made another 100 lbs. 😂

The Hannover Wurst has a little Dittmer’s history behind it, too. Years ago, my father made this German-style sausage at the request of the German Consulate in San Francisco.

And our Game Day Sausage brings the red and gold for football season. ❤️💛

The Yahoo Goodbye
Back before Yahoo had a cafeteria, during its early days, a group of employees would come into Dittmers to shop for lunch meats and bread to take back to the office.
They would always look for my dad, Dittmer, before they left. They would smile and ask him to say, “Yahoo!”

My dad would smile, and in his wonderful German accent, he would stretch it out:

“Yahooooooo!”

Everyone would laugh, and for a moment, the simple goodbye became a little tradition.

It’s one of those small memories that still makes me smile - and a reminder of the warmth and personality my dad brought to everyone he met.

🌭 A little taste of Germany, made right here in Silicon Valley!
Today we made three classic German sausages: Bratwurst, Weisswurst (Oktoberfest sausage), and Thüringer Bratwurst — all made from traditional German recipes.

And we’re especially proud that our Bratwurst and Weisswurst received Reserve Grand Champion awards at CAMP this year! 🏆🇩🇪
